Bought a used vrs today and didn't get to the end of the road before engine went into limp mode

I picked up my 2008 vrs TDI pd today. 44000 miles on it. Dealer changed timing belt and water pump for me and serviced it. I took her out of garage. Engine wouldn't go passed 1500 revs or 30 mph and when I tried to accelerate it went into limp mode.

I took it back to dealer and he said it was something silly from service. He hooked it up to computer and it have a fault code for a valve. I said I'd leave him to look at it and call back an hour later. Dealer then rang me to say the engine bust a valve and it needs a part ordered so ront be ready for couple of days. I was that annoyed and disappointed I didnt listen closely to what he said. I think he said it blew the head manifold gasket valve.

Anyone any experience of this problem? I think mechanIc caused the problem when he tried to service it. Dealer is an independent used car dealer, not a skoda dealer. I live 70 miles from dealer. He said he'll fix prob and deliver car to my home in next couple of days. Any advice on what problem is. The car hasn't been inspected for the injector recall. Dealer confirmed this send I had agreed to get my local skoda dealer to do inspection / recall. I wish I had have got main dealer to do service now. Any advice appreciated. Thanks

Do you really want this car fixed and given back to you by the same people who serviced it.

If it was me, and I've been in the situation recently I would be writing a letter asking for a refund under the sale of goods act.

Unless you really want this car then it's up to you.

Do I have legal right to reject the car? I was googling sale of goods act and it says buyer has to give dealer chance to repair car before refund?? Clearly car isn't fit for purpose though :(

If I did get it back I would want an independent check by a dealer or Rac , and maybe for them to pay for 1 year warranty, a proper one, not one not worth the paper it is written on

Theres no way on earth i would want that car back.I would reject it.

I'm telling you I was in a very similar situation, write out a letter stating that the car was misold and is not fit for purpose and say you want a refund, you don't have to ask them to repair or replace it but if they are clever enough they might say they have the legal rights to do this first. Then you should take them to court if they won't refund you.

I actually had my car for two days until I noticed my fault, it took me 4 weeks to get my money back.

Your in a better situation given that the garage still has the car, if it were me I would take this opportunity to get money back ASAP.

Echo the sentiments above. Do not take this car under any circumstances.

Seek some legal advice, make sure you're clued up with legislation and go explain your case to the garage. I'm sure once they realise they're talking to someone with the slightest bit of knowledge they'll offer you the money back.

I'd say they were one tooth out on the exhaust cam. They mustn't have inserted the timing pins properly. (if they used them at all)

If I had to guess, I would say that the belt wasn't tensioned correctly and skipped.

I would reject the car.

Thanks for comments guys. I rang dealer this morning and he wasn't very helpful. He said he would give me refund minus the cost of service (£250) and years tax of car (approx £150). He changed the diagnosis of the problem to a burst boost valve which I don't believe for a second. He dismissed it as a minor problem and said he'll give me a 6 month warranty on car.

I don't trust this man as far as I can throw him. I paid him by cheque with £220 cash deposit. I gave him cheque yesterday. I don't trust dealer's word at all so I have instructed the bank to cancel the cheque. I rang dealer back twice after first call this morning to inform this. Dealer hasnt answered my calls. So I sent him a txt informing him I am rejecting car for all reasons you guys have said above.

Just as I am writing this dealer rang me back to tell me the injectors have gone on the car and all need replaced. He gave me grief that I made him tax car and change timing belt and water pump. He said he is keeping £200 deposit for these reasons. He also said he never usually changes belts and it was my fault for making him change belt. I obviously told him that was rediciilous and if his garage wasn't qualified to carry out repair then they shouldn't have done it.

Long story short I have lost £210 deposit. I might get solicitor to write him letter requesting this be refunded but at the mo I'm just delighted you guys convinced me not to accept car and I cancelled cheque. I think if I buy another vrs i'll go for common rail engine and get main dealer to service/repair. Thanks a million guys. It was very close shave

The injectors on the car are a replacement done free by Skoda anyway, sounds like you had a close shave with these monkeys, I do hope you get your deposit back, small claims court springs to mind, they do not seem honest to me. They can always send the tax disc back for a refund , minus a month . Close call

put the details on here as well, so no other unsuspecting person goes and buys that car from that dealer

Not sure if it is allowed but if it is I will certainly name dealer and car reg. dealer told me a catalogue of lies and at end of call he told me he'll sell the car no prob. I have no doubt he'll patch up the engine so it's drivable and he'll sell the car on it's looks to a poor unsuspecting buyer. His mechanic definitely screwed up the timing belt which caused unknown engine damage. Dealer told me he never usually changes belts. I doubt they even carry out service but they say they do. They are clearly wholly incompetent mechanics :(

Naming the dealer would be fine im sure its the reg that I am not 110% sure on but the dealer with spec of car should be alright. I have named the supplying dealer I used to get my car new (Motorline Skoda Dartford) and made my feelings on the service provided there clear and misinformation etc tried on numerous times :@

The fact that he's changed his story 3 times about what is actually wrong with the car, says everything. I wouldn't give up chasing your deposit. Don't line this mugs pockets!
