Bought a used vrs today and didn't get to the end of the road before engine went into limp mode

Send him a letter recorded to say you will take small claims court action, he has entered into a legally binding contract and has not furfilled it. Give him 7 days, indicate this in the letter. Speak to Comsumers Direct for a letter template.

Not sure if it is allowed but if it is I will certainly name dealer and car reg. dealer told me a catalogue of lies and at end of call he told me he'll sell the car no prob. I have no doubt he'll patch up the engine so it's drivable and he'll sell the car on it's looks to a poor unsuspecting buyer. His mechanic definitely screwed up the timing belt which caused unknown engine damage. Dealer told me he never usually changes belts. I doubt they even carry out service but they say they do. They are clearly wholly incompetent mechanics :(

Report him to trading standards.

I will definitely chase the deposit and report him to trading standards. The dealer is Crawford Cars, 45a Bog Road, Lisburn, Northern Ireland. Car is a Jan 2008 black skoda octavia vrs TDI, 44000 miles. I have reg if anyone requires it. Dealers website is http://crawfordcars.utvdrive.co.uk/used-cars/

Whether the dealer "normally does cambelts" or not is irrelevant - if they weren't confident (or competent) to do the work they shouldn't have agreed to do it. Also, what sort of dealer doesn't have a friendly nearby garage that they get to do this sort of thing if they can't do it themselves - a cr*p one. Trying to charge you £150 for road tax which he can get mostly refunded is also beyond a joke. The car is now a lemon, the contract is null and void, he owes you ALL of your deposit.

You guys advice was invaluable :-) My saving grace though was that I paid him by cheque. If I had have paid him by cash or bankers draft or even hire purchase finance I wud have been in a much worse position. I have no doubt I wud have been stuck with a lemon. So my top tip when purchasing a car is pay by cheque and if not happy after purchase cancel cheque.

I think you were "lucky" with this aspect. Surely any half-decent dealer wouldn't have let you drive the car away until the cheque had cleared?

I was very very lucky Kieth. It certainly wasn't intentional on my part. But if cheque hadn't cleared dealer could have done me for fraud If it bounced so most dealers wud give car before cheque clears. I have agreed to buy an 09 vrs cr TDI with 78000 miles on it from a more local dealer with a years warranty on it. He is letting me drive car away tomorro and cheque won't clear for a week. If at all possible it is the way to go :)

Welcome to the CR club ;)

This is a good example for justifying the £50 annual fee for which? Legal help.

Glad you got sorted in the end.

Good luck with the new one too.

Glad you got sorted in the end and welcome to the CR club.

As mentioned I'd be pursuing all monies are refunded plus something to cover inconvenience and stress and I think it's also worth taking legal advice as to whether you can litigate against him for deformation of character too as he's listed you as a timewaster in the 'updated' advert for the car.

2008 Skoda Octavia VRS RE ADVERTISED DUE TO TIME WASTER £9,750 I love his advert

The bloody cheek to call you the timewaster! You bought a car that didn't work! They wasted your time!

Glad you didn't get stuck with it though. Also it sounds like their aftercare would have left a lot to desire should you have had any more problems.

Good luck with the new car.

Phil

haha class.... the bare face cheek of them to say "time waster"

LOL

I think you had a lucky escape there. They sound like a right shower and re advertising with a heading like that only goes to show they are amatures and not to be trusted selling toy cars, let alone real ones.

Good luck in your search for another one and I hope you find a better garage.

Glad all sorted now.

One we can all learn from. Pay by cheque........!!

Since when did the octy vrs have a heated front screen?? it doesnt even have rear electric windows or dual climate or jumbo box.

they are now advertising this car with a full year road tax and with the cam belt and water pump done. The fact that he is now selling the car with YOUR road tax on it further strengthens your case for a full refund. Take these clowns to the cleaners

Only Fords have heated front screens the dealer obviously has a standard template and was too lazy to edit it properly

The time waster reference has now been removed from the advert.
