What the obsession with whiter and whiter headlights

I have previously and after a stint on the +30/+50/+80% bulbs now run selective yellow headlights and full beams.

They're great in the bad weather and about the same as the normal +50% on a fine night.

Iv recently been blinded by yellow, purple & green lights. The colour of them doesn't blind you, it's the alignment & poor headlights themselves that do that.

  • My opinion. (grumpy old man) Shame that while others think that they need to improve 'their visability' while reducing 'my visability' as i drive towards them, or as they come up behind me. I thin

  • Bluddy hell, another thread that has turned into a xenon haters paradise. It's ridiculous! How many more threads are gonna contain a legal debate? I forgot the original question! Someone in a bit wi

How do you mean selective?

The problem is yellow lights look dated but then lights shouldnt be a fashion statement but they certainly seem to be these days. Look how more and more complicated the led daylight running lights are getting, jag, audi and BMW are constantly trying to out do one another. Land rover also - the ones on the evoque are ridiculous.

This has now gone full circle, twice over.

"The problem is yellow lights look dated" -- so is that the answer- vanity? What is the problem with something looking "dated" if it works OK? The big problem on some cars, including, in my opinion, the Octavia, is that the standard "yellow" halogen lights on the Octavia do NOT work as well as they could do, and can easily be vastly improved by the fitting of an aftermarket HID kit with whiter, brighter light output than the standard halogens. Projector lights were DESIGNED for xenon bulbs, after all.

"I'll fit whiter headlights because they look good" -- let's get things into prospective -- the primary function of HIDs and xenons, and the main reason that folk retrofit, is to provide better safety by having lights that allow you to see more in the dark, and the vast majority of the vehicles that are retrofitted with HIDs are done for exactly that reason. We are not talking about the stupidly blue/purple high temperature bulbs here. The title of this thread is about "whiter" lights.

End of story.

DRLs are a totally different subject, they are lights used during the day, and don't have any issues at night. Who's bothered what shape OEM DRLs on different cars are? We're talking about headlights, the lights you use to see where you are going during darkness here on this thread.

Standard/OEM xenon/aftermarket HID -- it doesn't matter what type of bulb -- set up correctly they are no problem and do not dazzle. Badly set up lights of any description will cause problems, even the new LED lights that are now being used on push bikes.

All that is needed is that everyone on the road ensures their lights are properly and legally set up, and that if aftermarket conversions are done, please re-align the lights to compensate. There is no excuse for badly aligned lights, it is sheer laziness on the part of the user.

Chill out and get off your soapbox. Its only a discussion. If your not happy the direction the thread is taking read a different one. My comments about the "vanity" of white lights is true. Headlights on modern cars are all about the bling. Nothing wrong with that if it sells cars but talking about it shouldnt get you all upset and excited.

Other are talking about the stupid retrofit chav lights and whether you like it or not its a valid point as they probably are the biggest culprits when it comes to dazzling and they are "whiter" lights after all.

DRL are "white" lights and IMo they can dazzle so they are relevant to the thread.

You obvioulsy have issues with people discussing their opinions on different types of "whiter" lights hence why you cant post in a restrained manner.

No need, quit the attitude.

DRLs not relevant to the thread as the title is specifically about whiter headlights.

I run 2 cars myself with white HIDs, and also totally agree about the problems of dazzle if they are not used correctly.

Your comments about vanity are also agreed with -- once again OK as long as they adaptation is done correctly and everything is properly aligned.

I don't agree with your comments about the "chav" retrofits as these are generally not white at all, they are the blue/purple ultra high temperature bulbs, but who's getting hot under the collar about it? After all, it's only a DISCUSSION.

I'm merely saying, as I have done before, that properly used, whiter headlights are no problem at all, whether you want to use them for vanity, or better vision.

Not posting in a restained manner? I hardly think so. Throwing your arguement back at yourself, I'm entitled to my opinions just as much as anyone else, and my opinions are that the issues about folks hating them because they dazzle simply would not happen if the users weren't so bone idle and would go and get the lights properly set up.

Mike

No attitude here mate.

So now you agree with my commnets about vanity yet in your previous post you slated me for it? Where exactly do you stand on this matter?? I dont actually have an opinion on whether the vanity issue is good or not im just saying that it must be vanity as the big car manufacturers headlights and DRL's are becoming ever more complicated and fancy and it certainly isnt for safety reasons is it? They are merely trying to make their cars look better and therefore sell more. Talking about something is not necessarily the same thing as agreeing with it. Considering the topic was "whats the obsession with whiter lights" then saying the obsession could be led by fashion is relevant but im not sure why you feel the need to have a go at me over this opinion. Why do you think BMW, Audi, Jag, Range Rover have overly fancy lights if its not a fashion thing?

I have a young apprentice pumber at work who has retrofitted "white" HID lights to his van and he freely admits he did this because they look cool. I didnt express an opinion on this either however but i agree with other posters on here that they are distracting when driving towards you.

The only thing i have expressed an opinion on is xenon lights which are "white" but i havent been arguing with anyone about them and if you dont agree with my opinions then fine but dont post things like - "this has run full circle twice now" and "end of story" or write "discussion" in capital letters as this just highlights any lack of restraint on your part as you are clearly getting worked up about it.

For clarity what exactly is it that bothers you so much about me saying that i think is vanity that is the main reaon for whiter lights? If you dont agree then tell us what you think the reason is - safety? I dont agree with this TBH as normal lights are perfectly safe and my standard lights are quite white anyway. If it was a proven safety feature they would be implemented as standard or be forced to fit them by regulation. If safety then brighter lights would suffice and they wouldnt need to be white or rediculously complicated and fancy. If xenons are so safe why then ate LED's replacing them in top end cars? Because they are new and look cooler but probbably dont produce any more light.

If anyone could take a pic of halogen v xenons in a dark area to gauge distance and field of view on 2 of the same cars I think some may be interested.
