Lowwering on OE dampers isn't great on anything, JOM coilovers are circa £200 from DPM and adjustable, be warned one owner has just cracked his gearbox casing on a cats eye so slamming it possibly isn't the best idea.

Armrest wise I don't know but as the Passat wasn't based on the MK4 chassis then i'd be wary without someone saying 'yes' but anything's possible.

Oil (check the approved list), oil filter, air filter, cabin filter, plugs, coolant (check age), brake fluid (check age), G20 gearbox fluid (not on the schedule but it'll be well past it's best), lube hinges, check bushes, drop links, bearings, disc's, pads, tyres (even wear, matched, spare? etc.) and generally get to know the car. Knowing how things are makes it easier to work out if something's changed, oh and invest in a code reader or if you can then a laptop/netbook with the shareware version of vcds will cost less and give more info/options. Oh and re-set the service indicator ;)

Judging air flow by noise isn't accurate, in general bigger fans move more air and spin more slowly than a smaller fan spinning like mad, judge it by what it does not how it sounds.

Apologies in advance for long winded reply.

Here is my Mk 4 Golf copy armrest - cost EURO 20.10 just over 2 months ago, (probably = approx. 50 pence in £ sterling today :wall:

It is a HK copy but matches my sport interior perfectly. I won’t put the link to the bloke I got it off as it took him about 7 weeks to get it to me from Bundesbank headquarters, after I kept reminding him how much closer Germany is to the good old Emerald Isle than China. The bracket was wrong, but that didn't matter as I was going to modify it anyway, but I wouldn't have been at all pleased if I'd bought for fitting into a Golf!

Some of the lads on here have used self tappers to the front and rear in line with the centre console to attach it. What I did was modified the bracket so that 3 bolts go up from the cup holder into the base of the armrest with a metal bracket under (fabricated) and on top (supplied bracket modified) of the console, with the top bracket also extending to the hole on the side of the armrest where it would also attach as an OEM fitment. I also made the top bracket thicker so the armrest sits a bit higher up.

Sure I read on here that a poor fan and a lot of noise from behind the dash could be a cover missing from the pollen filter? Maybe do a search on that.

So far I have always used the Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel 5W40 however the price of that over here appears to have shot up by 20% since my last oil change less than 6 months ago - I saw some Valvoline that appears to good for PD engine today that is 14 Euro cheaper for 4 litres than the Castrol so am looking into that now. Can anybody recommend??

That's what my money would be on...

Dont get cheap coilies, unless you want to be under the car every winter making sure they don't sieze!! I got AP coilovers, can't fault them, great ride etc, but i didnt use my car much over the last 2 winters, and they siezed solid!! Can't adjust the fronts at all. I would go for a good quality spring and damper kit, or spent a bit of moolah and get Kw Inox coilies.

copper grease...... im such a boy scout

If you'd purchased 'expensive' coil overs they'd probably be just as stuck if you neglected them. Please don't blame the product when clearly it's a user/maintenance issue.

Thats for all the replies! Gonna give the pollen filter a look at!

Thanks for the long winded about the armrest! Imgonna check the scrappies for one later!

The thing about coilovers.. I have jom coilovers and mine are not seized just spray a bit on apc on them and clean the threads usually does trick. Usually do this everytime i have the wheels off. If u wanted to be even more anal about it you could duck tape up the remaining threads so they dont get any road grime in them...

Maybe the blower is full of crud. There a guide here somewhere to clean it out.
