Another flat tyre within 6 months!

Featured Replies

I swear my car must be cursed! I went to the cinema last night and when i got back to my car the passenger side tyre looked very deflated! As there was nowhere to go to up it up I had to drive 20 miles back on the A21. Every tiny hole and crack in the road made a loud bang as i went over it. I got home. This morning went to local pump to try and pump tyre up but no luck! I just gave up and called AA to take wheel off and put the spare tyre on. The point i'm trying to make here is, this is the only car i've ever owned that needs tyres changed this often! average tyre change is every 6 months and i only drive 12k miles a year! mostly local driving. What the hell is going on here?! My tyres are Mitchelin sport3 low profile tyres and their not cheap! Last one was £180!!! I'm seriously thinking of changing it for something else at this rate. A 4x4 springs to mind with very strong tyres! I'm not very happy about all this and i'm loosing faith over my car.

Sound like you needed to carry a pump.we have one that works off the cigarette lighter

Also a decent took to check the pressure.

Driving under inflated will ruin a Tyre.

Finally worth shopping around Michelin ps3 can be bought for 147 quid fitted in 225/40/18.

Just think out is bad luck to have 2 tyres need replacing

Sadly its one of the reasons I don't buy the top brands... one nail or screw and it seems nobody will repair them and you lose a packet!

Nothing wrong with a repair if its done properly.... most places just seem to want to sell you a new tyre!

I had 2 non-repairable punctures just 3 1/2 weeks after buying my car :(

I'd had mine for 6 days and the front passenger tyre got a puncture, and the back 2 were advisory, so I got all 4 done.... No new sat nav or remap for me for a while!!!!

That is bad times though, having that many punctures in that timescale. As solwood said, those compressors that plug into the cigarette lighter are invaluable!

But the Tyre pressure guages on them are rubbish way out in my experience hence use a separate gauge

Your lucky you didnt wreck your wheel driving 20 miles with a flat tyre, why didnt you just put your spare on yourself when you spotted the flat tyre, you may of got away with a repair so no new tyre required. Its not the cars fault you have been unlucky with getting two punchure's,a 4x4 wont solve your problem,if you think your octy tyres are expensive wait till you price one up for a 4x4.

Your car has a spare and yet you drove 20 miles with a flat tyre?!?

To be fair this isn't the cars fault!

Surely the biggest thing here is that he called the AA to change his wheel!

Please send your Man Card back to the address on the back!

Its also only his second post, how about cutting the guy a bit of slack?

Remember not everyone has the same interest in cars or the same level of mechanical expertise.

Quite a few mates of mine wouldn't attempt a wheel change and I don't think any less of them just because I can.

Lets face it owning a Skoda means you won't have much use for your AA cover so you may as well try and get your monies worth while you can :giggle:

Fair enough if you can't change a wheel but begs the question why he didn't call the AA (I presume the car is over 3 years old also?) when he noticed the puncture instead of driving 20 miles illegally with a flat tyre....

I had to call the AA once, as I couldn't get the damn wheel nuts off! He had to use the gun himself to get them off.

Good job I did call him in the end, as the spare I had wasn't an alloy and he had to do some modifications so the wheel would fit. (My old Fiat Punto)

I used the AA to change my last flat. I was in a light coloured suite on the hard shoulder of the M6 and just didn't fancy changing it myself, oh and I had an IBM server in the boot that required a three man lift.

I've had 1 puncture in my Octy (None repairable) one in my Hyundai Santa Fe (Claimed non repairable but 2 services on they got sick of telling me and just fixed it anyway - got 70k out of those Hancook tyres) and had one in my wife's Merc which Quick Fit fixed (And didn't even try to sell my some new breaks at the same time).

These things happen, probably more to do with where you drive than what car you have.

I know i may upset some people on here, But if you cant do a simple job like changing a tyre then you should not be behind the wheel of a car. Yes there are good reasons for doing it your self, Disabled, M6 hard shoulder with flat on off side of car just to start. But to drive 20 miles on a knowing flat tyre thats a shocker, then start having a go about a car because of a tyre and the flats that there getting.

M6 hard shoulder is a good reason to change your tyre yourself?

think he meant to put not in there.

I had to call the AA when I couldn't get the locker off. Kw*k F*t had tightened it way too much on a previous tyre change. The AA chap said the torque setting they'd used was far too high.

As above, I'm sorry I don't carry around an air gun to remove things that a garage has put on with too high torque settings.

Although, catzi, that's your own fault for using kwik **** :p

Why didn't he call the AA when he notice it in the 1st place to sort it instead of risking his life or others than drive it.

oh dear!! 20 miles..........

anyways - wat tyre pressures r u running? alignment?

obviously something is not right if ur having to change tyres every 6 months!!

I assume you meant to say wheel instead of tyre? I'm fairly sure most people wouldn't attempt to change their own tyres.

I've changed plenty of wheels in my time and it takes some strength to loosen most wheel nuts. To say that someone who isn't able to change a wheel shouldn't be behind the wheel suggests to me you haven't exactly changed many yourself.

Your lucky you didn't do more damage than just a tyre driving for 20miles with a flat. Could have easily wreaked the rim as well.

Thats why I always carry a 12v pump.

Might be worth while talking to the place you bought the tyre from. Some places (Kwik Fit for example) include a guarantee with their tyres which, I believe, covers punctures in the first year.

I would think it would exclude a lot of women from driving (I'm not being sexist, I didn't say ALL and it would include many men as well), I know my wife has changed a wheel with help from some of her friends but they had a lot of trouble getting the wheel nuts undone.

Many people have no interest in mechanicals at all and therefore wouldn't attempt anything, including changing a wheel, which is fine as long as they turn maintenance over to someone who knows what they are doing, rather than just ignoring it, so that safety is maintained.
