Yeti 4x4 manual transmission: can you hear it?

Featured Replies

My Yeti has more than 3.5 thousand kilometres on the clock now and recently I began to notice gearbox whine in 1-st and especially 2-nd gears when braking with the engine. The whine is not too loud but it gets more distinct as the gearbox warms up. I couldn't hear it when the car was new. I guess the change is due to the oil (fresh oil makes engines/gearboxes quieter but then quickly looses this soundproofing ability). So my question is: can anyone else with a manual gearbox hear it?

Hi, Short answer is NO. Mine is a 170 and the box is quiet. Had a 1984 Passat from new and the box graunched changing from 1st to 2nd. VW eventually fixed it with 'special' oil. I was sceptical and nervous that the oil was so thin that it wouldn't protect the box. I had the car for 10 years without further trouble so suspect it just needed to bed in a rough or lazy sync./bearing.

If yours doesn't settle or gets louder get it sorted under warranty.

Good luck.

A 'no' from me also.

Hmm, there is a whine that annoys me slightly on my 170 diesel, which is that over 80 in 6th there is a definite disturbance. I can't be 100% sure where it's coming from - could be a/the diff rather than the the gearbox but it's a significant disincentive to pressing on. This is not a speed that I normally exceed, even on motorways, and so it's not an everyday nuisance but on odd occasions when we really need to get somewhere in a hurry it's quite noticeable.

Of course I should be able to tell you what rpm it starts at and whether it's also there eg in 5th but I haven't done a detailed analysis although my recollection is that it's there in 5th too. It may also be there in 3rd/4th but usually at the relevant rpm I'm accelerating hard rather than cruising and so any whine is masked I suspect

Edit: Should have said that mileage is around 14K.

Thanks everyone! Found a similar topic on the VW 02K gearbox, but no mass complaints on the Yeti/Golf 5/6 (Upd. came across this: http://www.golfmk6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15146). Looks like I was lucky  Those with whining gearboxes say the problem doesn't progress further than the annoying sound though.

Er - not from here..... (LOL)

I knew that someone would politely ask for a record :sun:
