Is this related to Dual Mass Flywheel?

I have recently bought an Octavia 1.9tdi, 56 reg with 66k on clock from Skoda dealer and comes with one year Skoda approved used car warranty. Shortly after taking delivery, I noticed the judder when pulling from around 1100rpm in third on light throttle and also a general roughness when pulling in 5th at same sort of revs. I took the car back to the dealer for investigation, having read the the related topics on dual mass flywheels on this forum first, they are not happy to undertake any work at the moment, asking me to bring it back if it gets worse! Now, on three occasions over this past week in city driving, starting off in first with revs around 1100-1200 when letting in the clutch, the engine stalls! This is nothing to do with my driving style, I have just come from owning an Octavia tdi Mk1 for the past 10 years driven in the same style, and had enjoyed driving it very much for 96k, the smoothness and economy were very impressive and led me to recommend Skoda diesels to family and friends. So the question to all the experts on this forum is, Does having a failing dual mass flywheel contribute to the likelihood of stalling the engine when it is under light load in first gear at low revs? Any other possible causes? Will be going back to the dealership once I have read any replies.

I bought my 55 reg 1.9 TDi PD a couple of months ago, and initially all was well and smooth. Then one day, I was coming back from a trip, and noticed a juddering/vibrating driving up a hill in 3rd at around 1500RPM. This then became worse, and happened in each gear, when I accelerated. I booked it in to have the DMF changed over to a SMF, and the drive to the workshop to have the parts fitted was one of the worst I have been through. I stalled the car a couple of times, and the clatter was getting worse. When the old DMF came out, there was an enormous amount of play in the unit, but luckily for me, it didn't break up and damage anything else.

What you have described certainly sounds like the same thing.

Car now booked in to Chathams, Dunfermline, to have the flywheel investigated next week. car now crashing gears going first to second and very notchy change, hope they fix all this otherwise this will be my last Skoda, oh and the drivers door mirror glass has almost detached itself, now held on with gaffa tape! Will be asking for new mirror as well since I bought the car with the one year warranty. Will keep you all posted. Thanks for the replies to original post.

Such a relief to have the warranty there I bet! Just sit back and relax let the dealers sort it but keep a beady eye on them. Imagine if you had of bought it from a private seller!!!! :sweat:

Warranty means nothing when it comes to Dual mass flywheels, Skoda will come back with "seems fine to me" still have a bitter taste from these muppets and Mark Fox

I think that the DMF and the driver's mirror lens must be kindred spirits, kind of soul buddies, because when I replaced my DMF with an SMF, it took less than a week for my driver's mirror to decide that it too had seen enough of this World, as it flew away to join its departed friend in the great Skoda parts bin in the sky.

You will be happy with the result of having a SMF fitted. It will transform the car and the way it drives. Lots of us on here are very satisfied and have done considerable mileage now.

Push the delaer to investigate, as it's only going to get worse. And if it get so bad that components start disintegrating, then it's a much bigger repair to sort out.

Skoda dealers are now replacing the failed DMFs on the 1.9TDI with solid flywheel conversions. Both my 1.9's have been converted, andI wouldn't have any worries whatsoever about having it done. The difference in the way it will drive is tremendous.

My experience with 1.9 Tdi under warranty was that once dealer accepted there was a problem they still wanted to replace DMF with another DMF. They did not volunteer any info re. existance of SMF conversion. With a little bit of perseverence they did agree to fit a (Sachs) SMF conversion. On ballance I think this is the best move. Only a little bit rougher at idle than a perfectly functioning DMF (bear in mind that a DMF will only be functioning at its best for a very short time) no risk of stalling, increased reliability

Mines very much smoother on idle now and no engine shaking and rattling. There shouldn't be any noise at all after conversion.

SUK authorised my dealer to do the conversion due to the HUGE amount of DMF complaints and claims so they are very aware of this conversion kit.

Do they do a conversion kit for the 2. TFSI? I bought a Mk2 on saturday and today there is a knocking sound and get vibrations through the clutch pedal when setting off in 1st. The car came with 12 months free warranty so if it is the DMF Hopefully it will be covered.
