sump plug issues

Featured Replies

Fabia vrs 54 plate, 135k my ex company car. Always been maintained by a garage. I had a little difficulty removing the sump plug, it was tight, then loose, then tight again whilst removing it. Replaced with a new sump plug and torqued to 30nm. A few days later noticed oil on the drive. Jacked it up again and risked nipping it up to 40nm. Left it on the jack an hour or so and oil appeared again. I then unscrewed the sump plug about half way, no oil coming out, and used some sealing compound around the washer and nipped up again. Not sure if this is going to stop the leak though. Anyone else had similar issues? Worst case scenario, i spotted these on ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-OIL-SUMP-PAN-WITH-HOLE-FOR-LEVEL-SENSOR-1-6-2-0-1-9TDI-1-9SDI-038103603N-/280850969238?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Cars+Type%3A1.9+TDI+RS&hash=item416405b296 . Anyone changed a sump? Is it a mammoth task?

Cheers,

Phil

Sounds like the sump is cross threaded. You should replace the sump - it's not too difficult.

In theory, you could have the sump tapped to a larger size, but you would have to pay someone to do it and you couldn't use standard VAG sump plugs.

Sounds like the final Part on the thread on the plug has been stripped so won't tighten. If the thread looks fine then it needs a new sump really, which is not a big job

It does sound like a stripped thread, hopefully on the sump plug which will be around a pound to buy. You will have a big problem if it leaks really badly so urgent action required. Hope it isn't replacing sump which seems like a big job. Someone may come along with an alternative like retapping to a slightly larger plug size but I'm not sure about that.

If it is the sump threads, you could delay the problem by about 10,000 miles by draining the oil, cleaning the sump plug and sump threads and allowing to dry completely, then Araldite the sump plug in to create a perfect seal , change the filter and refill with new oil.

YES, I KNOW IT'S A BODGE BUT COULD GIVE YOU TIME TO GET A REPLACEMENT SUMP AND CHANGE IT WHEN YOU HAVE THE TIME.

You will NOT be able to remove Araldited sump plug without destroying the remaining thread in the sump!!

Hope this gives you some ideas.

Yeah, its sounding like the garage has cross threaded the sump then. The sump plug is brand new from the dealers. The plug does tighten up fine, its taken 40nm with no problem. I can easily put a helicoil in which would retain the original thread size but to be honest, the recoil kit is as expensive as the sump pasted on the link and it would require removal to fit one anyway. Anyone changed a sump or bought one from this guy on ebay?

thanks for the replies,

phil

GSF is a well known motor factors. They have trade counters all over the country including several in Manchester. Not sure you would get the same price as eBay.

You could get a secondhand sump from 'Skospares', I found him really helpful when I bought a couple of Fabia consoles. Reasonably priced & prompt delivery.

Just ask him to check the thread before sending it.

Replaced with a new sump plug

Grabbing at straws.........

I'm sure you didn't forget but... you did fit a new washer as well?

I'm in the same boat as you. I got mine re threaded and use an oversized plug but it still drips slightly :(

It's easy to remove once you spot the bolts holding it to the gearbox, you need nice long allen keys with those ball joints at the end so you can get at the bolts from an angle.

I'll be ordering that sump on payday!

If the plug is still taking torque then the plug is not going to fall out. It may be slightly misaligned so not sealing properly. Perhaps fit a suitable sized Dowty washer and see how that goes.

Id have the thread retapped or a new sump repaired .. Until then get some thread tape wrap it around the sump plug (quite a but of it) then put the pkug back in . Tht might hold off the leak for a short while

Something similar happened to me on my early Fabia SDi. Some numpty machined on the sump plug and the first time I did an oil change after it was out of warranty the plug came out with the sump threads...

I ended up getting it heli-coiled and a "much" larger plug. My father now drives the car, it's now over 10 years and is serviced regularly with no issue on the plug..

Thanks,

Phil.

Hey Timberwolf, how did you get on with all these ideas? Did you stop the leak or get a new sump? How was fitting sump ( if you did)?
