EGR Issue

Featured Replies

I have a bit of a problem with lumpy idling and sometimes taking longer to start than normal, I was told to check/clean EGR valve. Could someone please take some pictures of where the EGR valve is on my 1.2 engine and what I need to do to check/clean it?

Also is it worth checking and cleaning the throttle body at the same time? If so pictures and guidance on doing that would be much appeciated as well.

Many thanks!!

EGR is located at the top of the engine at the back

have a look at this thread for details on how to clean it out

It should look like this

It could potentially look like this

Jesus that was one filthy EGR!!

Mines the 1.2 engine, so will that be a different location? Also any tips on how to remove please? I'm not an experienced mechanic, just a bit of a DIY enthusiast and it's not something I've done before...

Many thanks!

I'm not even sure the 1.2 petrol has an EGR :S

I thought it was a diesel thing for reducing emissions

Heres the state of one removed from a Jetta in the states:

oh hold on

Google images seems to say that a 1.2 petrol one will look like this

EGR075.jpg

no idea where it'll be though!

Yes, that's the right valve; it's located under the large square air filter that covers the engine, right hand side front, just behind the radiator. Look for the large round, 2" intake, black pipe on the front corner of this hood and it's just under there; it's attached to a copper coloured pipe. Now here's my problem..........I want to clean this. I have seen many youtube tutorials on how to clean a variety of egr's but none for this particular type.

Has anyone cleaned one of these? post-22612-0-16882700-1341949982_thumb.jpg

I my experience, the EGR in petrols engines does not suffer that coking up that DERV engines EGRs do. So probably nothing to gain by trying to clean it. Unless you have access to VCDS or something similar, cleaning up the TB is also a lost cause as the TB should get re-adapted after cleaning it up - as would the EGR if it was cleaned up. You should really buy a Haynes book for this car if your car fixing knowledge is "light" - other wise you will end up costing yourself big money if things go bad. There can be issues, at least with the 1.4 engines over gunking up of the EGR to inlet pipe - but eventually the EGR low flow fault will get logged. Are you sure that your problem is not just a timing problem and maybe your car needs a new "timing set" fitted?

Edit:- one of the problems these EGR valves shown can suffer from, is that the manufacturing "blank" that gets pressed into the bottom of that assembly - starts to leak or gets blown out after the alloy body gets burn away - you could use a mirror to check that out.

Yep, I had a go a while back. There's a fair bit about it in this thread: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/235977-wideband-lambda-on-12-12v-azq-egr-valve-in-the-end/

Petrol engine EGRs don't get nearly as mucky as diesel ones though, so 'cloggedupness' is unlikely to be the problem. What symptoms are you experiencing?

If you follow one of the links in that thread to a pdf that Pierburg sent round to Techs you'll see that this valve has had some problems in early revisions and/or with early ECU software versions. The very last paragraph of my thread has a couple of diagnostic tips that I believe to be valid.

@OP: I remember trying to reply to this thread from a campsite on the Gower but the WiFi on the site let me down. Hope you got it sorted.

Iv just had a call from the garage where my vrs is getting serviced, new egr valve required:( £170. hmph. +170 for the service. An expensive week!
