  • On the actual replacement of the EGR system, I'd highly recommend the Darkside kit. Has been on my car for about 10k now and working faultlessly. That's more than can be said for Allard parts I've us

  • Ive got an 09 plate and the previous company owner had the EGR cooler replaced for the same symptoms, dont have the invoice so cannot tell you how much was charged?

  • Cheers, hope it all works out for you. Mine has nearly 500,000kms on it, I can't really complain.

It's worth a try, work wanders for me :) make sure you keep us posted

Yep have done the same. Just waiting for them to arrive. Be nice if it sorts it!

yeah keep us posted!

That's more than can be said for Allard parts I've used in the past. Would avoid them like the plague personally.

This is very reassuring info.

No worries. Any more info you need, or photos etc drop me a PM.

Excuse my ignorance, but what's the EGR cooler and what seems to be the problem here? Just wondering if it's something I should be knowledgable about just in case, or whether it's not even on my car?

Won't directly be a problem with yours, but there's a decent amount of info here:

This issue here is with particular reference to VAG diesel engines. Not knowledgeable on the use of EGR systems with VAG petrol engines, so can't comment on whether you even have one!

And mine will be done in the next month - just need to get myself in gear and order the stuff from Darkside

What where Darkside like to deal with, delivery times etc etc ??

I havent ordered yet, but I emailed them a couple of questions on a Sunday and they replied at 8am Monday, which is pretty impressive.

I'll let you know when I order mine what the experience is like, but I know Wardy was impressed with them compared to other companies I shall not mention.

I ordered the EGR delete, the cooler delete pipe and a inlet manifold gasket from them on the 9th so we'll see how long it takes to arrive in Ireland.

I have to say,any email query's I had with them where answered super fast..........so here's hopin'

I have also instructed my mechanic to clean the throttle body, inlet manifold and knock out the cat while he's doing the job. Hopefully the old 500,000kms engine will be breathing a bit cleaner !! I hope it doesn't die on me from the shock.

Great to deal with. Fired questions back and forth, after my experiences with 'the other option'.

Think it arrived next day after I ordered it IIRC.

Oh - and mine runs without a cat as well. Again, no problems :)

Cat? Have I got a Cat on mine?

I thought the early PD140s didn't have Cats (hence why I pay £170 VED as it is a higher band)

TBH I haven't even looked to see if I have one!

You have a Cat (catalytic convertor) its in the exhaust.

You don't have a DPF (diesel particulate filter) which is what you mention in your post.

Thanks - I knew I didn't have a DPF.

The Cat will be coming off then as well at some point

I see that it is straight after the turbo - I'll wait until something goes on the exhaust and then I'll replace the lot from the turbo back

Only thing you notice with the decat is a slightly more diesely smell outside the car at tickover. And I think it sounds slightly better without it at higher revs, although the Pipewerx exhaust will have something to do with that too!

My original got taken out when my turbo failed, and there was no way I was putting one back in!

Right my tablets are here. Trying to find out the capacity of the cooling system so I know how many to put in but struggling to find it.

Anyone know or how many tablets I need?

If its the ones I had I just put 2 in and it worked no bother

Got mine today as well. Very good service from the States.

I was surprised myself how quick they came through. get them in now see if they work :)

  • 3 weeks later...

Right, got the Darkside EGR / cooler delete kit fitted and also had the intake cleaned and the CAT removed. My coolant leak seams to be sorted but haven't taken it on a long run yet. The car seems to have crisper throttle response and seems to be nippier from engine idle speed.

bought a pack of those pills for my partners car(2.0 TDI leon), they seem to have worked grand, I looked up online but couldnt find exact figures for the size of the coolant system but found info on a GTI, I worked it out that it would need 3 tablets, so used those, 2 weeks now and no further problems, coolant loss has stopped and no more steam from exhaust in the morning.
