Real World MPG

Featured Replies

I'm too old to change now but I always wanted to be a long distance lorry driver on the Isle of Wight.

Ouch 26.4 mpg!!

Did I warn you stage 2 mpg was quite bad, I can't remember? The Shark map seems to be even worse on mpg than the stage 2 map I tried for a brief period.

Get stage 2+ it's much better on economy.

I did drive like I stole it on several occasions .........

How can stage 2+ be more economical then?

I'm not sure but it definitely was on my car. On stage 2 I saw 30mpg regularly, on stage 2+ I saw 34mpg regularly. Motorways gave much higher figures at stage 2+ (38mpg) but I only got about 32-33mpg with stage 2.

(all figures are from full tank to full tank not from trip)

softscoop - don't you like the MK2 Fabia vRS?

Similar power to the Octavia vRS and just as much space (in my estate anyway!) the mpg around town is roughly 35-40mpg. Long runs and on A/B roads 55mpg can be had :)

I like the Octavia but the Fabia does everything better for me, in a slightly smaller, cheaper package!

If I'm honest.... no.

Don't get me wrong, they're good cars.... but I'm still not convinced on them.

I can't quite put my finger on what it is..but it just doesn't appeal to me.

Plus, mk2 Octys are bargains right now, and are easier to find specced up than Fabias.

Mine is a TSI and is not a great car for short runs, takes ages to heat up especially in winter. I have a 17 mile each way commute at mostly 60 mph and can get 30mpg out of it if I listen to Radio 4.

Good job you dont have a diesel. Ours used to take at least 3 miles to warm up but now our Octy tsi VRS takes half a mile & it's getting warm, in winter,

Damn you Martin ............ looks like I will be on the hunt for some internals after my holiday!!!

I'm not sure about the Shark map but on my map it was the case, maybe PM Sy and ask him.

I drive an identical commute, 1 roundabout and no traffic lights. Winter 32-34. Summer 36-40. Depending if I am late or in a rush. Helpfully it is the type of car and engine you asked about. These threads often seem to either get hijacked or become a diesel/petrol discussion.

I had my TFSI VRS for 1 year and 22K.

Average per tank was around 36.5 mpg doing an 80 mile round trip, most of which was down the M2 on a daily commute.

When I had time off and drove it around town and/or had a bit of fun it was 28-32 for a tank.

I owned an Octy vrs tfsi for nearly 3 years and when I sold it I had averaged just over 26 mpg according to the maxi dot. I'd be lucky to see 300 miles out of a tank.

Can get 400 miles from a full tank, commuting i get 35-36mpg motorway run 40mpg is the average i had 43.8mpg last sunday going up to Arbroath.

Going to work and back 14 miles each was I get between 40-45 mpg and always get over 400 miles on a tank.

Car is a 56 plate with 56k on the clock with no mods and runs on supermarket petrol.

To put all this in perspective, the tank holds at least 12 gallons. So, 400 miles from a whole tank would be equivalent to 33 mpg - about right by my reckoning for shortish trips. To get 45 mpg from a whole tank one would have to drive for 540 miles between filling up. That is possible on long trips but I think fanciful on short ones.

Mine on short journeys 4 x 2.5mile per day, work, home for dinner, back to work = 30/33 mpg, or 350/400 mile per tank full.

120mile journey across country on A roads, between 50 mph and 100 mph getting between 38/42 mpg, got 500 mile from tank fuel, and that brim to brim figures but have to say that the trip figures are very accurate on mine too.

AND YES it is a 2.0 Petrol, NOT modified but running on 99ron Tesco Momentium, when ran on normal 95 unleaded figures dropped too 27 mpg, hope this helps.

Bloody hell Tesco would love to use you in their advertising. Use their 99 fuel and you reckon you get 11-15mpg better consumption. :wonder: . I see some right dreamers on a Vauxhall site I go on, the best one was a guy who reckoned he got 58mpg from his V6.

I've got a 2007 Vrs Octavia and had 29 on the maxi dot average. My commute is about 11 miles sitting at 60 most of the way. I have some around town stuff on other days which must bring it down as I've never seen the 35 - 37 averages some people get and I drive it really gently the majority of the time. Maybe needs longer runs to get that average or something. When I first got the car I was getting about 330 miles from the tank full to the light just coming on. It now seems to be just over 300 till the light comes on. It's done 35k.

Somebody at work has an Audi a4 with the 2.0 tfsi, it's a 220bhp version and he gets 35 and sometimes more on his average using V power. He reckoned the tfsi engines can see higher mpg with it. He got his wife's a3 1.6 up by 5 or 6 mpg when he put a tank full in.

I gave it a try and the average on maxi dot has gone up a little. It went to 31 and up to 33 at one point.
