Real World MPG

Featured Replies

I appreciate there are quite a few threads on this already, but just want some quick answers.

Honestly, what MPG can you actually manage to get out of a petrol TFSI vRS when just commuting?

Currently have a 9 mile commute, mostly A-roads at 50/60 mph.

Well my 2008 tfsi is currently doing nothing but the pre school run and the odd short run (5 miles ish each way) as my other half is on maternity leave, and the average according to maxidot is circa 25/26 MPG. Thats with the A/C constantly running. The other day on a longer run (I live on the Isle of Wight so no such thing as a long run) I managed 33 MPG average driving like a saint (which was boring!)

EDIT TO SAY : Average speed according to computer is normally around 28 MPH over here.

Mine averages 30mpg on a mixed rural/A roads/ town of a 32 mile commute, think I can get between 35 - 37 on a run

Mine is a TSI and is not a great car for short runs, takes ages to heat up especially in winter. I have a 17 mile each way commute at mostly 60 mph and can get 30mpg out of it if I listen to Radio 4.

They defo prefer a decent run. All the short journeys and stop start trips that we do kills the MPG. Im still glad I didnt buy the diesel though.

Hmm, even over my relatively short commute, I can get 50+ without really trying in my mk1 Fabia.

I'm tempted to look at a Mk2 Octy, but fuel costs are going to be my biggest concern.

My commute to head office of work is 12 miles ranging from 30-60mph and it does 33-35 mpg everytime.

By the end of the day when iv been to all my surveys which is all start stop mileage, I'm getting 24mpg.

Start/stop journeys crucify my fuel but at the end of the day I don't expect it to be brilliant doing the job I do, I just accept it as its the car iv chosen & wouldn't change it for this reason alone.

Mine on short journeys 4 x 2.5mile per day, work, home for dinner, back to work = 30/33 mpg, or 350/400 mile per tank full.

120mile journey across country on A roads, between 50 mph and 100 mph getting between 38/42 mpg, got 500 mile from tank fuel, and that brim to brim figures but have to say that the trip figures are very accurate on mine too.

AND YES it is a 2.0 Petrol, NOT modified but running on 99ron Tesco Momentium, when ran on normal 95 unleaded figures dropped too 27 mpg, hope this helps.

I think you have been very fortunate with your short journeys. Long journeys I am in complete agreement.

32-34mpg on my commute which is 13 miles each way. I'm on a larger K04 turbo BTW.

re short journeys, had car since March, and been like this weekly since then not one off's to be honest, when fuel shortage, had to put normal unleaded in, which TSI supposed to accept no problem yet that only time i've dropped into the 20's for mpg

My 1.8 TSI averaged 44mpg on the last fuel fill - computer showed 45mpg. Typical journey to the golf course and return is on B and A-class roads 15 miles each way through villages and one town travelling at legal speed limits but easy on accel and anticipating braking. Occasional trip around the supermarket car parks and the odd short journey of 5 miles or less.

If you use the car's potential occasionally but also sensibly with good predictive driving you should get the book figure of around 37 mpg. All cars fuel consumption is poor until up to proper working temperature which takes a few miles.

Our Fabia VRS feels quicker than our Octavia VRS but is probably very similar but probably is capable of 40 mpg ish on such journeys.

When looking at the cold light of day I choose the 1.8 TSI DSG L&K. Peformance good, 0-60 in 7.5 seconds, 40-43 MPG, super comfortable etc.

Hoping Skoda come up with some good stuff by raiding the Audi parts bins as there is some very good kit in there, VVT TSIs, 7 speed DSG which can handle lots of power. Skoda often just gets the scraps unfortunately.

I would have considered a Fabia VRS (mk2) but its too small as I have 2 kids. A few years back I had a Civic 2.2 cdti and on a mainland run it could get over 50mpg. On the Island however it would never see 40 mpg. Normally mid 30's.

My old Mk1 vRS did 35mpg to work (7 miles for me) and my new Mk2 does 33MPG. I drive like an old git where i can, just to increase the MPG. Was a little worried after collecting the car and traveling back home (90 miles away) i was only getting 36 on the motorway. Hoping a remap might push those figures up abit

Thanks for the input folks.

My fears are confirmed about the massive drop in MPG that I'd get if I swapped over to petrol.

Looks like I'll be sticking with diseasel for a while yet.

can i ask what you getting at the moment ?

If I really hammer it without any consideration to fuel economy, 40mpg.

My average over the last few months according to Fuelly is 50mpg.

60+ is easily possible on motorway runs.

If anybody wants objective information on fuel consumption then I would recommend browsing fuelly, or better, spritmonitor. You can look at loads of vehicles and see how the fuel consumption varies over different usage/owners/vehicle etc. It is much more real world than an anecdote from one driver of one vehicle.

See my fuelly sig. I try to be gentle on work commute, but stop start traffic will ruin any attempt at being thrifty. Plus I still haven't got bored with the remap.

I had a Mk1 Furby VRS 06 plate BLT engine and loved it I sold it and ordered a new Octy and have my CR TDi 11 plate now even that is a hell of a drop in mpg over the Fabia. If I saw a black magic Furby totally stock non messed with under 40K I would sell the Octy and buy it :D . If there is nothing wrong with the Furby keep it as long as you can so much less to go wrong with them mine was remapped and it made it come to life!

I drive on the same sort of roads for 16miles each way in a TFSI. I get 37mpg regularly.

My record was 43mpg when I was recently forced to do the run at 40-50mph.

Lots of overtaking + cold weather can take this down to 32mpg quite easily.

I've said this in a recent thread but don't mind repeating it, a couple of weeks ago I did a brim to brim test and achieved 26.4mpg, but everyone of those miles put a smile on my face.

Last week I did a trip to work at a leisurely pace and according to the trip computer I achieved 37.2mpg ................... B O R I N G !!!

Ouch 26.4 mpg!!

Did I warn you stage 2 mpg was quite bad, I can't remember? The Shark map seems to be even worse on mpg than the stage 2 map I tried for a brief period.

Get stage 2+ it's much better on economy.

I'm too old to change now but I always wanted to be a long distance lorry driver on the Isle of Wight.
