[Resolved: Demap & Refund] Longyear's Boost Stutter & Surge thread

Featured Replies

This is exactly why I bought a Shark STS unit. It gives me the peace of mind that I can slap it back to standard whenever I want. Not that I have ever wanted to!

Sorry to hear you're still having issues. Cars are real heart breakers at times.

Hopefully you get a speedy recovery and you can get back to enjoying the car again soon

That's a really good point. The full Shark remap + STS package can seem expensive at £500 but you're right there is absolutely no substitute to being able to remain in control and not give up your ability to get your standard map back, should you need to.

There are a couple on eBay actually, started looking at them today. I understand they'd need the immobilizer to be deleted? ... don't know much about it, but it may be a possibility! .... of course, I'm sure I'll get stock map back on eventually, when the guy who remapped my car decides to prioritize it and walk around the corner and sort it.... but in the meantime I may look at an ECU change anyway because it may get rid of the surging that I'd probably see again on future remaps. (There is a VRS Mk 1 ECU on eBay at the moment, with a REVO remap on for £150, but without the ability to test it, it's a risky proposition!).

Cheers.

best not to waste anymore money,as u say wait and get you old map on and then if you wont to get it remapped again by a good company who have the skill to sort any probs(if any) :)

Absolutely, the ECU thought was just for the future, possibly. No more spendies until the stock map is back on! :)

You do not need a new ECU or anything like that, we can reflash your stock, original, 100% factory map for you, please just pick up the phone and talk to us on 01623 332233 because the amount of pain you're putting yourself through is honestly making me cringe.

Put simply: it does not need to be half as difficult as it appears to be (or as you are writing) when you speak to someone who knows what they're talking about!

Ha ha, is it that cringe-worthy?! :giggle: Part of the problem is that I work a lot at the mo, trying to give my new business a good kick start, so a lot of the stuff in this thread is the result of quick searches for info, emails fired off, etc, in brief spurts through the day, and I've not had a lot of time to call any remappers such as yourselves for a chat. My issue is that when my working day is done, most others is too and they aren't picking up phones. Eg.. just finished work and got home and got to a place where I could make phone calls and it's 20.02

Anyway, n'mind. I was told by R-Tech that my original map would need to be on first, and I also was told today that my local VAG Dealer could/would not do the reflash, so the place I'm at at the moment with the car, ain't too far away from the drama and cringeness that this thread suggests. Also, as I've said, I simply don't have further funds to pay for another remap, even if it would fix these problems. Thus, I am where I am, and I need to wait for the original remapper to return the car to the stock map.

Fair enough, I know all about working a lot so I feel your pain. But your stock map does not need to be back on, I'm not sure who replied to your email but Nick would have known that. It just needs an original map putting back on which we will have on file, and any other good tuner would too.

You're not cringeworthy, but the pain you're putting yourself through for what could be fixed in approximately 3.5 minutes is unreal!

Further to that, a dealer can only overwrite your map if they have a factory update available, which is unlikely as there was only 1 IIRC for the Octavia vRS

Well thanks, that is useful advice and it's good to get the benefit of your knowledge. It's reassuring that I'm not high and dry with regards to the standard map. The thread probably appears more cringeworth because I'm kind of unable to do much at present, as I just don't have the funds at this point to take what no doubt looks like the easiest route: a fresh remap from someone like yourselves. So it's a case of playing the waiting game .

But we all love a good drama thread though, so I'm just here to provide the entertainment! :giggle:

Could you not just get Shark to return you to stock and then go from there? Obviously there would be a charge but it'd save you chasing this tuner who doesn't seem to be entirely forthcoming with sorting your problem out.

Just a thought.

Well just to take it back a step, the original remapper is coming this evening to put the car back to stock, so the best thing at this point is to wait and see if that happens, then car is running with the map it left the factory with. So let's see what happens this evening and take it from there

Arrived today:-

- New OE N75 valve (broke the last one by adjusting the screw to reduce boost pressure, which is irreversible).

- Bielectric silicone 'tune-up' grease. (To grease up MAF and other electric connections, as per 'cage mod').

:)

The car also has a brand new OE DV on it, so the ideal would be to get the original map on tonight, along with the new N75, and the brand new DV and MAF that the car already has on, and the bielectric grease on..... the car will then be in a great position, with some key new components.

The original remapper is here and currently reverting the car to the stock map. :)

Had a good chat with him, and he offered to put a 'milder' (lower boost) map on, but at this stage I think it's important to give the car a good run over a couple of weeks, with the stock map back on, that way I can be sure that the surge was within the first map, and also identify any non-map related issue with the car.

So back to stock for now

..and so this man's saga of 1.8T post-remap boost stutter & surge doth endeth! :sun:

The original remapper has put the car back to the standard map, and it seems to be running perfectly.

The remapper also insisted on giving me a full refund, which I thought was a very fair gesture, so all's well that end's well.

Will I consider further remaps? .... well on this car I'm not sure... maybe with a different (spare) ECU....

For now, I just want to start enjoying the car. It is about so much more than raw power, and when you bear mind that I had my remap and thus all of these problems just 1 week into owning the car, we really never got off to a good start! ...... so hopefully I can start to enjoy it, just as nature intended! :giggle:

Thanks for following my rollercoaster ride!

Well done máte atleast you got a refund

A refund which pays for a new good map

Your car seems to run ok with stock map but it doesn`t necessary means that everything is good. Remap usually highlights the problem(s) which already exists.

Thanks guys

With the standard map back on, I've taken the car for a good (40 mile) drive through some lovely twisties and 'B' roads that we have loads of here in County Durham. The car is driving absolutely beautifully. I have done some tests at WOT and partial throttle, light throttle feeling the point where the turbo comes in, etc....... at every point the turbo is pulling very healthily with absolutely no stutter or surge whatsoever. The car has a brand new N75 on, brand new DV, brand new MAF, and some bielectric silicone grease on the MAF, N75 and a few others electrical contacts. It may not be mapped but it is pulling really, really nice and feels super responsive and light. :)

The good thing about the way the troubles happened with the remap is that normally going from remap to stock would be a painful experience, with the loss of performance! .... but in my case, the car had become so poor to drive that I've had the N75 unplugged for a week meaning I had actually gotten used to the 4/5psi boost limit that applies when the N75 in unplugged and the wastegate opens passively. With the remap on in this state the car was also expecting a lot of air from the turbo at higher revs, so you could feel it 'choking up' and slowing when you hit the pedal harder.

With the standard map back on the car is flying..... ok, no 'rush' from 19psi of peak boost but nevertheless the car just feels 'right' ... it is idling smoother, pulling smoother and is a delight to chuck about a bit.

I'm sure I'll revisit the remap options again soon (I wouldn't have had the original remap if I was that content with stock performance) but for now, I love the car and it's been 4 weeks since I've been able to say that. ;)

Thanks to everyone who shouted up some help in this thread, which is quite a lot of you!

Cheers.
