just wondering if any members have similar issue with wheel hub rust. very unsightly even for 2 yr old car. i know ambient conditions and how stored factor but still feel bit excessive and dont recall issue with previous cars. Is this considered normal and whats best way to reduce/eliminate?

Do you use wheel cleaner? I tend to find this causes corrosion. The Bora is terrible for it but i haven't used any Wheel cleaner on the VRS and 2 years and 30k on have no corrosion on the hubs or the edge of the discs.

I have rust on the rear hubs too. I haven't used any chemicals on the wheels, so not sure if it 'just happens'. Anyone know if the dealers do anything about this?

yes but on the very odd occasion only and more often than not just elbow grease. Of couse I am second owner and cant vouch for first owner and how they maintained or stored the car although if had to hazzard a gues would say they did not which leads me to think its an inherent problem.

Wheel hubs rust, unpainted steel does this eventually, its the same across the whole range. Even my top of the range Audi has rusted wheel hubs, as did my Superb before and the Octavia before that.

You could remove the wheel and paint some silver hammerite on the hub, but it will rust again eventually.

bit dissappointing but as say reluctantly maybe only way to resolve is to paint over - will see how much longer can withstand before irration forces me to fix.

I painted mine with silver Hammerite last year when I swapped the wheels around,no problems since.

My main issue has been corrosion on the rear outer and inner disc faces. Appears the pads seized in both the callipers, presumably due to a combination of winter road salt and a lack of factory lubrication of the pad guides in the first place, thus preventing the pads making proper contact with the disc's during braking. With the winter steel rims fitted the problem was hidden until I switched back to the alloys.

Friend in the trade helped me strip them down and clean and grease them back up; mind even after over a months use the disc's are still quite pitted. Oh also added some copper slip the the exposed guides on the front callipers as well (FSIII type callipers only).

"Rusty" hubs, discoloured rear discs, other cosmetic "rusting" is all normal in the life of a car. You should see what some exhaust components end up like :whew: Discs in particular are consumeable items, and will be replaced several times in the lifetime of the vehicle.

It's nothing to be concerned about, it's quiet normal, and I would imagine most dealers would quietly s****** if these observations were brought to their attention as warranty concerns. Disc brakes could be made "rust" proof, but the cost would be prohibitive on a throwaway item. Most modern cars get a "bashing" as routine maintenance is confined to oil/filter changes and a cursory glance over - occasionally.

Bodywork protection is now much improved to improve the integrity of the bodyshell, which is both a major safety factor and cosmetic/resale consideration appearance.

Mine are rusty and the disc edges, but I have never seen a car where they aren't. As far as I'm concerned it's normal, if you want to emery cloth them and then paint that's one way of smartening them up, but you'll still have to keep an eye on them as it will most likely reappear some time.

It was worth my time joining this forum just for this single thread!

I'm a bit over worrying about stuff since opting out of a company car for the first time in 28 years and this exact issue has been bugging me a bit.

I'll calm down a little now I think.... :)
