Decat pre remap? Vrs Octavia tsi

Featured Replies

Insurance time is coming up for renewal - an as such a Decat and remap is coming up ie stage 2

Question is.... I know the Decat will probably throw a CEL without a remap but will it be safe to drive to the tuner for a live remap?

Seems daft to pay for a generic map to get rid of the cel to then pay for a rolling road session.

Suppose paying the tuner to fit the Decat would sort it but it seems a bit of a waste of dosh when I could do it for £20.

Thoughts please.

it should be fine to drive, the CEL will come on because the car will think the CAT is broken thats all, it wont go into limp mode and will drive as normal.

I thought that might be the case ;)

It'll be fine but could overboost without the cat there, so drive carefully and you'll have no problem.

Cheers ben

Yep wasn't planning on driving it mad until getting it mapped to suit.

To be honest I'd say just get a stage 1 map first and drive it with the cat in place. See how you get on with that first before you start with any mechanical mods.

When Ben tweaked my s1 map last year it hit 420-430 Nm on the rollers which is pretty epic on the road for just a re-map - any more and you'll be into upgraded clutch territory with the associated extra costs.

I've since spoken with another well known tuner who's view is that stage 2 isn't worth it on a Tsi - stage 1 gets such a great result, to go any further ie s2 the k03 will be maxed out (duty cycle? whatever, cant' remember the details) either way its going to put a lot of stress on the little turbo. His view was just do stage 1 or if you want more than that go k04.

02p etc.

Where are you based - no worries if you want to have a spin in mine?

S1 on the TSI is superb, 255bhp and 325lb (415nm) torque. I would only go to s3 after this and miss the intermediate step.

As you said the torque on S1 is only just on the safe limit of the clutch.

Isn't the turbo on the TSi the smaller, but more efficient IHI unit?

IIRC yes it is an IHI K03 on the Tsi (EA888).

Borg Warner also made a k03 turbo for the older TFSI (EA113) engines.

:wonder:

Ah, didnt realise the IHI was still classed as a K03.
