MK2 Estate Tyre Wear

Featured Replies

hi, got standard tyres (205x45x16) fitted to Elba wheels. When I picked up the car last May I felt that it drifted left a bit too much, even allowing for camber. Car was back at dealers 3 times in 3 months. Each time told tracking checked and all within Skoda parameters. They also confirmed all steering, brake, suspension components checked out ok. Eventually gave up but not before asking service manager what would happen if I experienced 'uneven tyre wear'. Reply was 'we'll cross that bridge if we come to it. Well last week, car went in cos I was of the opinion that the tyres were wearing unevenly, in particular left front nearside; suggesting that it was in fact 'scrubbing' due to drifting left. Went out with technician, again.Technician indicated that he (MK2 Furby VRS owner) thought the tyre wear looked 'about right' and that, although he could see that the car drifted a bit, it was nothing that he personally would be bothered about. Anyway, left the car with them. Got a call from service manager saying that tracking out and that they were going to charge me; eventually didn't following me reminding him of the 3 visits last year with this issue. Appreciate that I've gone slightly off topic; just wanted to 'set the scene'. My question is; does everyone suffer from this type of uneven wear? What kind of mileage should I expect from the standard fit tyres, Bridgestone Turanza: my current mileage is 9600. Is it just me being too picky??

So much you do not tell us!

How do you drive?

What does the car do, a commuter or a family car loaded?

*What tyre pressure do you run the tyres at?*

Where do you drive,

ie Is there many pot holes? (likely to cause tracking problems)

Did the tyres get changed from front to rear at any point to extend the life of them?

Does anyone else drive that might not kerb the wheels but use the tyres as parking aid?

IMO Probably about standard wear/life for modern ECO style tyres.

Conti's on the vRS have done almost 8000 miles and have hit the cliff when it comes to grip. Still legal but won't be for much longer. The passenger side is wearing more but I've put this down to roundabouts, Castle Combe track day which is a clockwise circuit and a fast welsh Briskoda run. I tend not to hang about and I'll use power whenever I can but will be off throttle and let the car flow through bends where I can too. All cars pull to camber which in the UK for driving on the left is left and some roads are worse than others. Overall though the vRS is pretty good

So much you do not tell us!

How do you drive? Pretty sensibly

What does the car do, a commuter or a family car loaded? Mainly commuter; 'open' roads, not much stop / start

*What tyre pressure do you run the tyres at?* As recommended on sticker inside petrol flap

Where do you drive, Mainly A roads and M/way

ie Is there many pot holes? (likely to cause tracking problems) No more than anywhere else!

Did the tyres get changed from front to rear at any point to extend the life of them? Nope

Does anyone else drive that might not kerb the wheels but use the tyres as parking aid? Wife drives it; from driveway to parking space at work. She knows better!

IMO Probably about standard wear/life for modern ECO style tyres.

I've answered your qs above.

My point about the tracking being 'out' was that the steering was no different to what it's always been; ie have to keep correcting cos it drifts left.

I'm just used to getting more miles per tyre. Previous 2 cars diesel C Maxs; both front sets lasted 16k plus

I have the Mk 2 diesel estate which I bought new in 2008 with 195/65's on 15" alloys. I get 21k from the fronts with no uneven tyre wear or drift of any kind. If you are very concerned then it might be worth getting a 4 wheel laser check carried out to make sure she is set up true.

I've got a MK2 vRS Fabia Hatch and got 21k from the front tyres (Dunlop).

Only once did they let go but this was on a slippy surface 1 day before I changed them..

Done almost 6000 miles on my Conti Sport 3's on the vRS Estate and no signs of uneven wear, they look like they'll do 10k + easily. I will swap fronts to the back anyhow and get a few more miles from them.

Castle Combe track day which is a clockwise circuit

I would expect that to take a heavy toll on ordinary road tyres.

I have the same tyres as the OP and I am now at 17K miles with 4mm remaining tread. If I swap them front to back now I might get another year before any will need to be changed! These tyres seem to be good for 20K+

Estate Man; dealer advised they carried out 4 wheel laser every time it's been in

Mike, now I'm feeling even more ###### off!!

How much tread do you have left on the fronts? My car will drift left, but no more than any other car I've had. The wider the tyre, the more it will want to follow road camber. I'm not getting uneven wear though. I also tend to add a couple of PSI above the unladen pressures.

Probably about 5 across the middle; looks to be about 1.5 above the markers on the outside part of the tread on the 'offending' tyre.. TBH thinking about increasing pressure on front in line with what you were saying. Starting to think might just be a 'duff' tyre. Incidentally, presume when it hits the markers it's time to change? Been a long time since it's happened to me!

Yeah, once it hits the markers, it's at legal minimum. If only the outside of the tread is worn, then it does suggest that the fronts have toe-in and the alignment was out. If the rear tyres are wearing normally, swap them to the front of the car and get it aligned properly.

Dealer claims that alignment is now 'spot on'. We'll see!.......that's the 4th time they've told me that.
