Shark remaps stage one power

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I'm looking at some cars on here and wondering what is a safe limit with just a remap on stock turbo using a 'shark remap', i wouldnt boot the car all the time and as i do long journeys just wondering what it would take according to 'sharks' dyno readings?

Cheers

What engine?

I have a Shark map on my PD100 and that gave increases of +34bhp and 55lb/ft (RS Tuning RR)

Sorry 130BHP

cheers

Standard stage one from shark is 165bhp

Thanks, can you go any further on the standard turbo with shark i hear 180BHP is the safe'ish limit?

It's really the torque you have to worry about. I've read 300 lb ft is the limit of the standard clutch. However Shark well know this and make them smooth and clutch friendly.

Their website quotes 165bhp yet everywhere I've read and I've seen a fair few of 'Ben claims' of 170 - 175 Bhp.

Any ideas??

The map will perform differently on every car, so don't get too hung up on peak power figures. Take it from me, they don't really mean squat. Regardless of whether it makes 165bhp, 180bhp, or even a stock 130bhp at peak, a Shark map will give you a larger area under the curves, which is what really matters, and what gives you the much improved drivability.

As has been said before 165bhp is the conservative figure ben quotes, and as many of the guys have said, the figure is irrelevant to a certain extent. You could have a car mapped at one place and have a "claimed" 180bhp, or one from shark with a more realist 170bhp, and still have a perfectly good clutch a few years down the line. Most companies will just turn everything up to the maximum, and give you a "little" more power, which is then no good for the engine, clutch in the long run etc Ben knows his trade inside out, back to front. If you want a completely different driving experience from your car, and still know its safe, go to Shark.

Im sure the majority of people on here will say the same :)

When the Fabia vRS was first remapped people made some fairly outlandish claims - 180-190bhp and huge torque figures. No-one put those cars on rolling roads. They just felt FAST. Those claims were basically lies.

If Shark's website says 165bhp then Shark will guarantee 165bhp on a rolling road. That doesn't mean it won't actually be doing 170bhp, they just won't guarantee it because you could take the car to a rolling road and it only makes 168bp and then you ask for your money back.

Engines vary. My 2006 BLT engine was measured at Power Station in 2007 and did 148bhp. It won't remap to any more than an ASZ engine that was measured at 130bhp. Skoda just turned up the power on the later cars, so they look like they don't remap as well.

Shark offer a rolling road run for something like £40. So for an extra £80 you can know exactly what power you are putting out.

BUT!

Most insurers remap cars on a percentage power increase. Usually 0-19% extra, 11-25% extra and more than 25% extra. If your car is rated at 130bhp (which all Fabia vRS's are) and you get a 35bhp increase then that's sometimes in a lower insurance bracket. I know Superchips used to claim 160bhp simply because it put the car into a cheaper power bracket for insurance.

Anyway. Shark are the number one VAG tuner for a reason. They have happy customers who recommend them and generate more happy customers.

There is no such thing as a "safe" remap. If you can't afford to replace the turbo, clutch and tyres then don't remap it. Remember that these cars are getting on a bit. The youngest were made in 2007, so they are at least 5 years old. The sought after low mileage ones will have had lots of cold starts and that knackers the turbo. The extra torque puts extra stress on the clutch. And you will spend more time with the ESP/ASR light flashing so you will wear the tyres faster. A remap will mean you have to replace parts sooner. You may get huge miles out of a car after a remap, but you would got more if you didn't remap it.

Cheers for the advice. Looks like I'll be going to Shark then.

One thing I can't seem to clear up though is that there are lots of praise threads for Ben at Shark etc. does everyone travel to Shark HQ or does he arrange their mobile mappers to arrange to meet you?

As there is a guy from Telford which isnt really that far away from me considering he is mobile too.

You can go to Shark, use one of their dealers more local to you, or get an STS which is sent out to you and you upload the map via the OBD port on the car. Very simple process.

Yeah you can either travel to Ben @ Shark in Mansfield, or as mentioned above, you can use the STS system which means you buy the STS device, read the map off the car yourself via the OBD port, send it back to him, he then writes the map to the STS and sends it back for you to load back on to the car (if i remember correctly) If i were you id pop down to the HQ is its viable for you to do so(i think its only about 70miles) it takes very little time when your down there, and you can get some first hand knowledge about your remap from the man who knows his s***

Best of luck with it

p.s in relation to the comment wja96, i wouldnt say that you will constantly have the ASR light on, the remap doesn't mean you just boot it the whole time and makes you automatically drive like an ass, and i dont recon you would wear the tyres quicker either unless you did just drive like a d***

Had my map on a pd130 turbo for about a year (2004 reg), and then the same on a pd150 turbo, only swapped as i wanted the bigger turbo, no issues with either what so ever and the 150 turbo is still going to my knowledge. The original clutch managed from 80k to 105k too whilst i had it, think the owner has now changed it, but not sure.

Proof that a remap doesnt necessarily knacker your car, if its driven with care, maintained, and the remaps are of a good quality, which Sharks are

Thanks! I didn't realise how close they where!

For some reason I'd got it into my head that their HQ was in Cornwall!

Say Hello to Ben for me if you end up going :)

Cheers, Elliott

Go Shark. You will not regret it :)

If those are your two choices, then I would definitely say Shark, 100%. Look for their open day video and you'll see why ;)

Are the shark ones £299, or do Briskoda members get a discount? :)

The only shark videos I can find mate are one with Bens Octavia and a Focus RS one?

There's no discount per se, but they often run group buy offers. There's an IbizaOC get-together up there in September (can't remember the day, the 9th rings a bell) so if you're looking for a bit off, you could pop up there and see what they're doing on the day, when I had my Fabia mapped on their open day for the new premises they did me something like a 33% discount.

Don't forget 10% off if you're a freedom member :)

Ahh, I hadn't seen that :) I'd literally never heard of Shark till that open day (other than knowing Rob worked there) so never bothered looking for them on Briskoda :D
