Smokey Diesel ( I know its a diesel )

Featured Replies

Friend was following me today and said that everytime I accelerate there is an awful lot of smoke from the exhaust (I had noticed it a bit from the mirror)

Now I know its a diesel and they all smoke, but I also noticed I have used a little oil recently.

Am I right in thinking the turbo seals could cause this? if so is it easy enough to replace them or is it replace turbo time.

Thanks

What sort of smoke? Most healthy diesels burn clean.

Black means not enough air. First check your air-filter, get your MAF checked and consider if your intake manifold is gunked up with EGR paste.

There are no ifs/buts or maybes about turbo trouble. You will not need to ask if that were the case.

Also check that all your boost pipes are connected properly.

Most common is the join onto the intercooler.

If these are split, you'll get a load of black smoke out the back.

A bit of smoke is normal on these engines if you boot it before the turbo has chimed in fully.

If it is still smoking with the turbo running then as above too much fuel and not enough air.

Any whooshy/whistly noises when you floor it? This could indicate a boost leak which is quite common on these with the excelently designed turbo hose clips.

Coming back from Germany the other week we had a pipe that half came off and caused a little leak that you could barely hear. It poured black smoke out the back... handy for the tailgaiters anyway!

I had a smokey Octy that was cured by cleaning the EGR assembly and inlet manifold - might be a good place to start.

After checking these things out I think the isue is the intercooler pipes. The crappy connections seem a little loose and there is a small amount of oil dripping from one side.

So is there an easy fix for this or is it a case of replacing the connections with new ones or is there a homemade type of fix that works.

Cheers

Replacements can be bought, but they're really stupidly expensive, and they'll eventually do the same thing if you go for the OEM replacements.

Cheapest DIY fix is to use self tapping screws through the collar to prevent them coming apart again :)
