Whoops... There goes my Xenon headlight...

Featured Replies

Hi all. The other week i was adjusting my driver's side xenon headlight. I was turning the screw to raise the level slightly when I noticed the light level had dropped as low as it would go.

Turning the screw did nothing. My mechanic looked at it and said the light was basically done and I'll need a completely new headlight. I know it'd be easier to give advice looking at the light in person, but surely something could be done?

The light works fine. Im thinking the screw inside has dropped out of place and needs replaced?

Thanks for any input

I had something similar with a Xenon headlight on my Audi S4. I removed headlight and placed in the oven to warm it all through and then gently prise the lense away from the body. The oven softens all the adhesive. A hairdryer could be used but its takes a long time.

Oven temp varies as to which components are used in the plastics. So start of low temp about 80C and increase slowly if the adhesive isn't softening enough.

My plastic clip had snapped off by a previous owner over adjusting/tightening the light. I used JB Weld on it and it worked perfectly since.

shove an object in there to prop it up. you dont want to buy a new light if you can aviod it.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll let the mechanic have a fiddle with it. It could be proper up but would the levelling system work after this?

Probably just come off the end of the adjusting screw, I believe you need to dismantle the headlight to resolve it.

You should really adjust the up/down angle of OEM xenons using Vag-com as that uses the adjustment motor to correct the height. All that happens if you don't put the lights into adjustment mode first is that the lights will go back to where they were before due to the automatic adjustment mechanism.

Yup. As above. Even adjusting the light manually as soon as you turn the car on again they will adjust themselves based on the sensor on the rear of the car.

You need to adjust manually at the same time as using VCDS/Diagnostics to tell the computer where it needs to keep the lights set.

You might be able to fix it but you will probably need to dismantle the light as above... which means getting the glass off the front first.

You may also be able to find a replacement off ebay fairly cheaply but they are far and few between due to the low numbers of Fabia's with factory xenons.

Is your car lowered by any chance?

When I dropped my car onto coilovers the sensor on the rear beam dropped my xenons as it thought I had a load in the back, so I didn't dazzle anyone.

Same as above, when you fix the screw mechanism, adjust the headlights with VCDS properly and your all good to go :)

I forget to mention guys that my levelling system hasnt worked for a while so I just adjusted the headlights now and again.

My car is lowered though the levelling system hasn't worked since before the coilies were fitted. I plan to have the levelling sensor replaced at the same time as the headlight is getting fixed.

Mine used to do the up/down start procedure when I turned them on, but after i fitted the coilies now they just light up then adjust when the back drops some more.

Try un-bolting the sensor and moving the lever with your hand manually. Then get some one to turn the headlights on/off. Illuminates a dodgy sensor.

I had the sensor checked on vag com by my mechanic and he said he could maybe get it working again but only after fixing the headlight.

Ive arranged for another mechanic to look at it next Wednesday. I'll update you's then.

Thanks for the help

It's come off it's adjuster, Easily fixed albeit time consuming!

Hope it's easy fixed. First mechanic said the screw or some part had broken and the fix was a whole new headlight.
