Update. Car has been in dealer for 2 days - received a call not long ago saying the new rack is on, the knocking has been cured (yaaaay) BUT they can't get the steering angle sensor to adapt. They're consulting SUK now as we speak....

  • Lots of cars have a slight knock moving the wheel while stationary. Also a steering knuckle inside the car will give same noise.

  • The knock first appeared in Dec 2010 when it was -6 outside and as soon as you'd driven it for a bit, thus there was some heat in the exhaust, it went silent - you could wiggle the wheel all you wante

  • Was that meant genuinely or with sarcasm? If it's the latter it can't be any worse than this thing has been, and considering many of these faults are common across the VAG range buying an A3, Leon or

Talking to Milton Keynes , yes heard that before , in other words we haven't a clue, why doesn't each dealership have someone with real knowledge of vag-com, even when you tell them something new, like the throttle body alignment after the battery is disconnected , you might as well have said I believe in aliens .It would take my mate 5 mins

Well just goes to show how much Milton Keynes (don't) know - it's still not home as they can't get it to adapt after 3 days. This is getting silly now as even once it's finished it needs to go for a 4WA so there's another day without it.

Seriously, just give me my money back and I'll go buy something else that doesn't fall apart/ can be fixed quickly/ doesn't cost £1,000,000 to run. :(

Because dealerships don't use vag-com they use vw's Own VAS system which is more limited than vcds and won't allow them to do certain things. To be honest some dealers are better than others and the same goes for the tech's working on the cars.

Yes I know they use their own system .but I can diagnose a fault in 5 mins. They were still clueless aftrt 3 days.If i was A service manager I would have someone with vagcom there .If a car takes 4 days instead of 5 mins will cost a fortune in courtesy cars

I don't have a courtesy car. Going to go and demand one today....

Bloody hell, no wrath like Chris without a courtesy car!

Got one. Not sure what it is yet but dont care as long as I have transport. Get the feeling this is going on for a few more days.....

Thats what happened to me, till I went down with my mate with vag-com and told THEM what the problem was. Some of them think because they have been doing it 10 years they know best

Got a Yeti 1.2TSI ha ha ha. Its a right giggle. Apparently the car is all done bar the coding for the angle sensor. Drives fine too apparently.

Got a call at 4pm today - car is ready, just needed a wash so off to collect tomorrow morning. Took 4.5 days, mostly down to coding. :(

Having the Yeti was fun though, quite enjoyed it, apart from the terrible engine. Not enough power for the size of the car and bloody thirsty - DIS was saying 39mpg but the needle was dropping really really quick. Used £30 since Saturday morning and not been far in it......reminds me of my E36 320i......

Will report back on how the car feels tomorrow but apparently the knocking is cured.

I think Milton Keynes is closed on Saturday , that is why it took so long, hopefully all will be good, fingers crossed for you

Picked it up the morning. 2 words summarised my reaction driving down the road- "HOLY CR4P!" - what a difference it's made. It's like driving a new car again. All knocking has gone, loose vague steering, random steering wheel wobble at speed that would come and go (which I thought was balancing/ buckled wheel) etc etc. It's rock solid. :D

Didn't realise how bad it was until now as it had gradually deteriorated over time and got worse and worse, looser and looser, noisier and noisier.......

So if anyone else has any odd knocking from the front and vague/ loose steering, after going through the usual motions of replacing "cheap" things like drop links, wishbone bushes, tie rods etc - it could be your rack. It's no longer unheard of.

Glad its sorted

Doubt i will ever get that replaced :( i'll just live with it for a while longer then i'm getting shot of it.

To be honest with the part being expensive and such a pig to fit I would be considering chopping it in had Skoda said no. Aftermarket racks are cheaper but still need to be coded once fitted.

The actual bolting on of the part is probably dead easy though due to its location, its the coding. Skoda struggled like mad with that but I dare say someone clued up with VCDS could do it in no time as has been mentioned.

Cost wise a genuine one is around 600 from the stealer, and andrew page wanted around 300 inc vat IIRC.
