  • A Skoda dealership? The tyre has to have the minimum tread depth (1.6mm) over a certain percentage of the tyres overall width. To me these look illeagal and if they aren't then they certainly aren't

The picture is not that good but as a vehicle examiner for the police, if I stopped you and saw that tyre, it would be a ticket for you. The tyre has to have 1.6mm across the central 3/4 around the wh

Dealer needs reporting for that, even from the small pic that tyre looks like its had it..I wouldn't trust them working on my car,if they think its acceptable to sell cars with tyres like that..

[hijack] Any good alignment places in central / NE Scotland?

I never did get it fixed.

Exactly it's just an advisory

Thats kind of the whole point, I was not advised

Was the car sold to you with 12mth MoT on it that they did themselves by any chance?

If so, you should have got the advisory. If you didn't, advise them that you will be contacting VOSA for doing dodgy MoTs on the cars they are selling.

Funny how my car was also MoT'd by the supplying dealer just before I got it and they failed to notice a failed sidelight bulb and rear brake discs that were shot. They replaced the brake discs after some 'discussions'.

What are the Skoda UK standards on tyres on Skoda approved used cars? I know Vauxhall used to make a big thing that on Network Q cars if the tread was less than 3mm they put new tyres on. In my opinion, at 3mm you need new tyres regardless of the legal limit.

If they were like this when you viewed/tested how did you miss them?

Would you mind naming and shaming ? Always good to know what dealers are prepared to let go so one can avoid them !

It is the same 3mm. My rear tyres were 3mm at lowest point and 4mm at lowest point but due to over inflation so looked like they had more than that, and I thought the dealer (jewsons Oxford) were unlikely to agree to changing them, especially since we'd got them about as low on price as I considered possible, the the extent that they werent up for replacing the wheel cap badges at £6 each. Turns out i got a call before I had a chance to mention it and told me they replaced both rear tyres. Overall have been pleased with them even though it's a two and a half hour drive each way which made some things difficult.

But anyway, sidetracking over, I can confirm that they 'have to' replace them under the skoda used scheme if they're below 3mm

As the title of the thread states, car was delivered to me by dealer, viewed online

you did not say viewed on-line you could have viewed and have had it delivered.

If this was your first sight of the car then AIUI distance selling would apply and you could send it back giving you 7 days to negotiate.

When I had a look at my 08 car (before I purchased it from Meadens) the rears didnt look particularly good. They told me that a used approved Skoda had to have at least 3mm of tread. Even though the tyres werent bad enough to fail an MOT they fitted 2 new ones for me before I collected. I would be severely ****ed off if I had collected my car with rear tyres in the condition that the OP has.

If they were like this when you viewed/tested how did you miss them?

Unless you get down on the ground it's actually quite difficult to get a good look at the inner edges of the rear tyres on a VRS. With just a quick glance they might look fine.

Just to cheer you up, if this stellar Dealer is happy to sell you a performance car with these very poor tyres, what else might be amiss? I'd have the whole vehicle independently checked.

If they were like this when you viewed/tested how did you miss them?

OP purchased in over the web so never viewed car.

I have sat in a tyre on a rope to swing over the river with more tread than that, and the one on the cattle grid to stop dump motorists hitting the pole that holds open the swing gate for pedestrians in Ilkley has more too! :giggle:

Car is a 10 plate so does not need an MOT yet.

I have emailed the dealer as he seems to be ignoring me now, will name and shame if this does not get resolved.

They did state however that there was 4mm tread on the outer wear indicator so in their mot testers opinion was a legal, safe tyre (wont be going back to Meadens Skoda again ever, errm opps :wall: )

To be fair Meadens are pretty good so I'm surprised at that.

They were in fact one of the best out there when I used to use them.

Who in the group are you speaking too and don't forget if you're using a skoda approved, there is a swap for another car option.

I can't say I'd be happy, but at the same time, there is still some tread there and without seeing them in person, I can't say how bad they really are.

What it does say though, is that you need a geo check on the rear.

Shocking!I would demand they be replaced at their cost and also want to understand why they wore like that. I wouldn't accept tyres like that on a car from a small independent dealer let alone an approved vehicle from an established franchise. Don't let it drop......

If you get no joy from the dealer send details to Auto Express regarding manufacturer approved used cars schemes, and send a copy to Skoda U.K. for their comments.

I'm surprised at meadens as well. Bought my car from them, had a few issues and they resolved them.

Sorry to be argumentative, but no MOT tester should ever pass that tyre. The requirements for legality stated above are all correct, in that the tread must be 1.6mm across the central 75% of the tread, but what has been omitted is that there is another clause -- the tyre must have VISIBLE TREAD OVER THE OTHER 25%.

That tyre isn't showing visible tread, and is therefore illegal.

Mike

The visible tread bit only applies to motorcycles, passenger carrying vehicles and goods vehicles (and the minimum tread depth is 1mm for these vehicles). For car tyres, the inner and outer 1/8th can be devoid of tread as long as no ply or cord is exposed.

Did you keep the old tyres for evidence or just the photo?

Why did you not use the 7 day distance selling to initiate negotiations?

Contact Skoda & ask them if they consider it acceptable, they have far more ability to kick the stealer before you have to go legal & start shelling out your hard earned.

Agreed Geo is shot so needs checking ASAP or the new tyres will fgo the same way

Hello Medic999,

Im sorry to hear you've had some problems with your tyres.

We are new to Briskoda so this is the first ive seen. Could you provide your name or reg number so i can look into this a bit further.

I have checked our emails from last year from the 1st - 26th of June and seen nothing, so this is probably why youve had no response. Did you try calling? if so, who did you speak to?

We would never let a car go out with tyres like that, so im interested to find out whats gone wrong.

Regardless of MOT we do a Full inspection. The legal limit is 1.6mm we would change any tyre under 3mm. These are clearly well below 1.6mm.

How long after purchase was this picture taken?

If you would prefer to email me, please use [email protected].

Regards,

Sales@Meadens
