Air/Con smells of wet dog

Featured Replies

It blows ice cold and works just fine but absolutely reeks.

I notice it the most as soon as the A/C is turned on.

What do I need, an A/C service?

Or can the system simply be cleaned somehow?

Get an aerosol cleaner, works well :)

Probably just some stagnant water pooled somewhere. Or it could be a bit of legionella. Either way, nothing to worry about.

An air con service should fix it.

Might be bacterial growth on the evaporator. You can get a disinfectant spray, as babs says, that will sort it out.

Make sure that the evaporator drain is not blocked and use an aircon cleaner.

Yeah the aerosol cleaner did the trick for me, got rid of the fusty smell. From what I remember you put it in recirc, let the aerosol go and close the door and leave it for 5 or 10 mins.

Before paying for the expensive spray (yes the comma one is good) try using detol.

Basically, take out the old pollen filter and spray some detol in there then run it for a few seconds to get the detol spray around.

Then put a slight mist of detol onto the new filter on one side (skip this for charcoal ones), clean the filter housing with detol and a cloth and then fit the new filter.

Next stick the AC on, and after a few seconds pop it on recirc. Then spray detol around the internal recirc intake.

That should kill the bugs pretty quick.

If you do use a comma, you'll want to put a new filter in anyway.

change the pollen filter first.

My car came from a dog owner too. If you check out this topic

it tells you how to get at the blower fan and pollen filter - ITS DEAD EASY.

I gave these a clean and a few drops of essential oil on the pollen filter after cleaning it. (I used neroli oil, supposed to keep you alert!)

Good opportunity to clean the blower fan, they cost a mint to replace.

And a squirt of dettol towards the air con heat exchanger. Made a big difference!

I also used febreze on the seats.

What a fantastic idea ! I might pop a few drops of Ylang Ylang on the wifes pollen filter !!! to get her "in the mood"!!!!

Could this be a new craze? Vaporised rohypnol into the cabin air intake?

You learn something new everyday, I didn't realise these DIY aerosols were available!

Any recommendations, a quick Google search brought up this Comma branded one from Halfrauds for £12?

Can't remeber the brand i used TBH. I went to a local garage and they had it in.

*EDIT* The halfords link took ages to load, yes i think that is the same stuff i used.

Try your local Poundland/Home Bargains store too

Have you checked for a minature damp Labrador in the glove box. I find removing sodden canines the best way of getting it smelling fresher :)

Where is the evaporator?

And someone also mentioned the internal air recirc intake, where is that also?

Thanks
