How Far To Drop Her?

Featured Replies

After my thread about the £80 wheels a resounding response was "would look better lowered" so I am now considering it. I have seen a lowering kit all 4 springs for under £70........

Its a 35mm drop based on new standard suspension, would this be subtle enough or overkill???

Opinions Please

sounds a nice drop on none vRS stuff mate, iirc the vRS is 19mm or so lower? dont know for sure.

Are the springs off ebay ? If they are the 1s i'm thinking off then i have just fitted these to my vrs.

They have brought the back down nicely but i think the front needs to go down another few mm.

Good springs though and i would recommend them to anyone.

MOAR!

Deck it on weitecs lol

how do you find the ride now? is it liveable with, i do 20k a year for work window cleaning. its the day to day im thinking about.

dont deck it on weitecs lol.

YOull bugger the handling big time and make it very bouncy.

what your looking at should be fine, maybe get hold of some good vRS shocks? to go with your springs. might be a better match to the std shocks.

Good quality too

Short answer: No.

Long answer: No, because not only are the VRS shocks not rated for the weight of your engine, but also that they have different roll bar mountings afaik.

I have decided that instead of springs and shocks i'm gonna go with coilies and be done with it... Because after buying springs and shocks I may as well have bought coilies in the first place for the cost.

they advertise as springs being the only thing needed to drop her, £65 total cost. would that be worth a punt on standard shocks? im aware someone has alluded to changing them, but will i get away with it. changing them myself so not a problem there

money is the issue by the way, i have about £63 so even this is stretching the budget hehe

thanks by th way the diesel is a beast of weight

@gee man, i wish i could afford that kinda clobber. nice

Personally i'd wait till you can afford to replace them and be either prepared to spend on replacement shocks or be prepared to do coilies.

More often than not there are so many things that could go wrong with this kind of swap that if money is tight i'd not risk it. Old shocks are always a gamble.

I mean for instance - you might get the old stuff off and find the top mounts and bearings are shot...

good sane advice there thanks. deep down i knew this to be the case. If it aint broke. In fact i was happy with the car until the resounding LOWER IT came along. mmm back burner i think until something actually fails and i HAVE to get in about it.

Now........ what can i get for it for £65, once ive a mind to do something......... i gotta do something.

list so far:

solid clutch fitted

arb bushes and drop links

wishbones and joints and bushes

track rod ends

all 4 bearings

drilled grooved discs and performance pads

copper greased everything to death

new exhaust system

egr delete

castrol edge

timing belt tensioner, pump, pink coolant.

From the Tech book.

Unladen weights ready for the road: vRS 1325-1375kg 1.9TDi PD (which is the heaviest)96kw 1295-1425kg

max Front axel weights are all 1000kg for all trims and rears are1000kg for the vRS and 990kg for the other trims

Only differences are the Combis that are 1000kg at the rear and of courst the 4x4 are different.

So in answer yes the vRS stuff will fit and work if thats anything to go by. You can still use the vRS stuff and just not use the ARB mounts. then at least if a vRS ARB and DL come up you can uprate it?

Top mounts and bearings are fairly cheap and Personally I would replace as a matter of course ween as your stripping it down. you will prob find the bearings will fall apart and the bushes will be squashed and no good again.

ah very enlightening thanks alot, i thought it strange that it wouldnt, plus you can buy wee stubby drop links to replace the ones standard. mmmm tempted again as its £50 for all and £8 each for Strut mount bearings £66 quid all in.

"dont deck it on weitecs lol.

You wont lol weitecs ride great lowered properly with a farb and rarb they ride better than standard shocks and lowered springs?

CUT THE SPRINGS LOL!!!!!

Sorry but you will. I have had them and i have all the rest of the stuff to support the slight lowering. Weitecs work best lowered 10-20mm max over the vrs hight but any lower makes the wishbones point up too much and make car bouncy.

If you like that the fine but personally i want my car to be tge best handling it can be. Hence why i have experimented a fair bit on hights.

Also kwv3 are the only way to go really if putting coilovers on. I certainly hope so ne way as i not tried them yet. Cant wait tho.

So has that one got cut springs on then? Why would you do that?

CUT THE SPRINGS LOL!!!!!

lol, i hope you are joking!

wish i was mate, got it like that, getting std stuff end of the month.

Marko

wow, i can't believe people still do that!!

nice to see you are changing! good plan!:>

To be honest with you mate i haven't noticed any difference in the ride.

Feels exactly the same as the standard vrs springs

I priced a complete suspention replacement at Skoda today for my vRS £728.81 inc VAT £260 of that was the springs £140 for the gasshocks the rest was bumpstops, nuts, bearings and top mounts.

I'm considering new shocks and eibach springs They are £174 for a set. ?

Matt

No way are the top mounts n bearings and bumpstops nuts n bolts 300 notes?

Sounds veru expensive
