Leaky roof!

Featured Replies

Anyone else got a leaking roof on the fabia?

Over the past few months I've noticed the odd droplet of water on the gear stick or dash after or during the rain. I've always thought were it came from and just passed it off as a splash from when I was getting into the car.

Until today.

Today the rain has been pretty heavy and consistent for a good few hours but had stopped as I was finishing work and my car was parked facing down a hill.

Went in and noticed a few drops of water on the rear view mirror. Alarm bells started ringing.

Pressed the roof liner just infront of the lights and water came pouring out.

Due in for servicing on the 5th so thats another thing to add to the list... Almost wish I never got this car now tbh!

I'm uploading a video so ill post that when its uploaded to youtube...

on a mk I i would have said ariel base leaking

but a mk II? top of windscreen is about the only thing close, unless you have roof bars

No roof bars or anything.

I think its either the ariel, or perhaps the window isn't sealed in correctly as its only at a very specific point, right in the middle and say an inch or two longer than the rear view mirror.

I noticed the window would freeze on the inside pretty easily during winter, but that happened on my old mk1 fabia too so I just put that down to it being pretty damn cold haha!

I take it you have a sunroof or I got it wrong?

Nope no sun roof which makes it even worse....

I'd say screen isn't bonded correctly. On a dry day before it goes in get a hairdryer out and aim it at the gap at top of screen on outside of car and have a feel inside it you can feel the draught off it inside between glass and and roof liner

Right is the car parked on an incline if so its the Antenna base to front along the lining to the front, it surely can not come from anywhere else as its the only access for water must not be tight enough to make a seal imo

Whether it is antenna or windscreen looks to me like a dealer warranty job (unless windscreen has been replaced). From the video, seems to be a bit more than a few drops. Not a great place for water either with the internal lights and alarm sensor up there as well as potential to drip down onto the dash.

If its the aerial surly the rear would get damp also when parked uphill. Could also check screen at night with a small high powered torch inside pointing up the screen against headliner and the check for light leaking outside and you should be able to see the sealant better then also

No as it would run and sit in the area around light , lowest point but if you pull light away you'll be able to see from which direction it's coming from, especially if you use a hose pipe

Gets worse...

It seems a windscreen attachment issue, since there seems to be a lot of water that should leave traces if the entrance is the antenna since she is in the back of the car. Why don't you take the car to a bodywork expert to have an idea of what could cause this water income and then back to dealer's ?

A few years ago a friend of mine having a 2002 Polo had a massive water ingress to his and his passenger's footwel. It was about a bucket o water and it was came from windshield. The bond / glue was missing just for some mm at the middle and a bit over middle of the left A pillar.

sigh... up here its been more blowy than rainy unlike down south with all the floods but it fair chucked it down lastnight and whola! one very wet dsg and a cup holder thats more like a small lake.

booked into dealers on monday...again!

I'd say top of the windscreen isnt bonded correctly. Is it the factory original or a replacement screen? Good luck with getting it resolved, thats pretty naff!

Not good. We had torrential rains here the other day and the my car was dry. As above, sounds like a bonding issue as I can't think or anywhere else the rain would get in. Good luck.

So how did they fix it the first time?? :wonder:

I've yet to have a watertight Skoda :(

There used to be a joke about Skoda door seals and unfortunately its got more than a bit of truth in it , but the roof leaking is a new one

They never fixed it when it went in, because they couldn't find a leak... even thought I showed them a video of it pouring out.

They said they washed the car and kept a hose on the roof/window but no water came out so they couldnt do anything apparently. Now that its happened again I'm going to ask for them to take the window off and re-seal it or something along those lines as theres clearly a gap somewhere.

Its the original window...

I know my old fabia had the dreaded door leak and now im unlucky with this window...

When having a day off from job, or whenever you can spend an hour or two with a friend you can try to keep car under water hose and wait and see where the leak is. Sometimes it gets a long time for water to be visible. I still believe that is a windshield bond issue, as long as you do not have any water stains at the rest of the roof lining.

I'm getting a new window on Wednesday. The seal had cracked at the top of the window allowing water to get into the car.

Dont suppose the admins can send me a new Briskoda sticker as this will unfortuantly have to be removed :(

the offending crack!

Glad you found the source of the problem.

How did they miss that the first time!

I wonder if this was the result of a pressure hose too close to the seal. On my car I have a couple of cuts on rubber seals from the old car wash.

That's exaclty what I had in mind when i wrote windscreen attachment issue. Thankfully they found it. I hope evrything is going to be fine after replacement.

32K, Under certain circumstances yes, e.g. an older car (> 5 years old) always parked outside without any rubber protection from sun, pollution and rain and as an addition freequent car wash with high pressure very close to rubber seal. But I think apmaman's car wasn't fullfiling all these circumstances.

It looks like it was just poorly seated when it was first placed on the car, and after the cars been driven the vibration and flexing has caused it to fail enough to allow water to come in.

The garage even carefully removed my briskoda sticker and put it on the new window for me.
