Miles per tank

Featured Replies

Hi all,

About to fill up with my 4th tank since new. Getting around 470 miles to the tank. Multidot suggests that I am getting around 42mpg. What do you guys get to a tank full - 2.0 TDI 170 CR DSG.

600-650 on my Octavia with a 55litre tank.

how have you achieved those figures when the normal returns for a 170 with dsg are 450-500.i would like to be able to get that with my superb.

bill

There are no such thing as normal returns. I can get as low as 500mile to a tank if i do a lot of town driving. On a run I can get up to 60-65mpg on an economy drive and around 50-55 on 'normal' motorway driving )ie driving at speed limit.

Pumped up tyres and 30k on the engine probably help as the MPG improves with every tank. Also i only use clean burning Shell diesel, anything else and i can loose 5-10mpg.

Miles per tank is nonsense. Nobody drives from a full tank to empty.

It's not too difficult to brim the tank and calculate distance travelled when next refuelling, but it's never a tank of fuel.

No but you have a range indicator on your maxidot.

I fill up (usually get another £3-4 in after first click) and run it until the light comes on. I usually have about 60miles left on the range at this point so quite easy to work out what you would get.

I also use Fuelly for more accurate data. My trip computer is pretty spot on to be fair.

Bill, the poster before you quotes an Octavia.

In 60K miles of driving my 2009 170CR Tdi DSG Twindoor, I managed an overall 46.793 miles to the gallon.

My journeys included a 86 mile [weekday] commute round trip over A and M roads primarily.

Best brim -> brim was 603 miles [11.43 gallons, 51.98 Litres] when car had covered about 25K. I averaged 534 miles per re-fill.

hth

last tank, 479.8 miles and MFD showed 40 miles to go - 170 4x4 estate with 29,000 miles on the clock.

What is `Fuelly`?

Had my 2009 170 cr dsg for 3 weeks now and managed indicated 52.5 and actual 49.26 mpg for the first tank! This tank is going even better with the long run I did last week. Very impressed versus my 26mpg bm!!

I have a Greenline so cheating abit. I easily got from Guildford to Newcastle and back without refueling (over 600 miles) and had some miles on the tank before I started and some left when I returned.

I'm consistently getting over 60mpg for all journeys which gives nearly 800 to a fuel tank of 60 litres but if I stay on the motorways that rises to 65-70mpg. The car ticked over 4,000 miles yesterday so has some freeing up to do. The greatest range I've seen is 980 miles after driving for 131 (total range of 1,111 miles).

I used to be very interested in mpg figures. Now I find them very boring. I just drive and enjoy my superb and don't look at the consumption at all. It was getting a little bit of an obsession but I have pulled through and overcome it. I found it was obstructing my driving experience and getting in the way of the important figure of SPG, smiles per gallon.

I do

I fill up on a Sunday night, drive to wherever I am working and come home empty, I never top up inbetween, I can't be arsed.

I'm getting between 420 and 460 in a Shark Performance mapped 1.8 TSi, dropping to 360 - 380 when I am having to do a lot of town work or hoofing it.

I'm only getting 46 MPG from the BMW, but that's because it's a bike and I thrash the tits off it everywhere :)

So when you've used up that tankful, you don't do anything else - just wait for the Sunday night to fill up? In a week where you get 360 - 380, you don't have any desire to do the other things which would take you to your usual 420 - 460?

Nope

I drive to my hotel on a Sunday, unpack my Felt hybrid pushbike from the boot and use that all week.

Drive home on Friday night park it up, use my bike / push bike / wife's Polo at the weekend.

Fill up on the Sunday night and repeat. Most of my work is in South Wales or the highlands. Highlands 1 tank there 1 tank back, south Wales 1 tank per return trip.

If you want SPG then do what I did and trade the170 CR Tdi DSG for the 3.6 4x4 DSG and you will not be dissappointed - it is a beauty and then some !

But for those worried about MPG then it costs 46% more for fuel (cost differential and my consumption profile).

I've had my 170 DSG elegance estate for a month now. It's done nearly about 1600 miles and I'm quite happy with the economy. Ok, the MFD will need some calibration which I hope to get done in a few weeks but the engine will still be as tight as a duck's whotsit. Just been down to Heathrow today on business so latest tank figures are (MFD)...

mileage 432

range left 175 (so potentially a 600 mile tank)

Tank mpg = 51.4 Northbound journey today (149 miles) = 60.4 mpg

Today's total journey was approx 290 miles and 280 of that is motorway or dual 70mph road. Southbound was done at about 75 mph and north at about 60 to relax in lane 1 and take it easy. Aircon was on for the whole journey home as it got warmer the further north I got.

I've come from a 120PS Vectra and used to mid 50s on similar journey, so I'm quite impresses so far. Looking forward to seeing the true mpg when I fill up tomorrow and update my fuelly account.

You don't empty the tank, there is obviously some fuel left.

Ah so to keep you happy I have to run it until I end up pushing it........... Whoot great idea man

I fill up as per my previous statement but I don't really give a **** about pedantry, there's far more interesting things around to occupy my time.

I bought a Superb a year ago, then woke up in the cravat and slippers zone :-)

I do, for one. My best result is 933 miles on a full tank (60 litres). This equates to just over 70mpg (actual, not MFD), based on 13.20 gallons, even though there was still a little fuel remaining in the tank.

Very bad idea tbh long term,

You add strain to the pumps and risk blocking the tank filter which in turn burns the in tank pump out, plus it's not good for the cat either, we all do it but I wouldn't make a habit of it, as soon as the needle touches the red mark that's time to get to the pump, hth.
