Replacement of front windscreen washer pump

Featured Replies

The flow from both washer nozzles on my '03 Fab saloon has suddenly diminshed - drivers side nothing and passenger side @ 50%. As the fluid reservoir is fulll, the washer nozzles are clear and the washer motor sounds OK, I'm suspecting that the pump rotor has partially failed .

I presume that the washer motor and rotor are one assembly.

Is this an easy DIY and if so what's the parts cost and time ?

Many thanks

Nick.

It's an easy DIY job, I did mine with an ebay pattern part (about £8) and it has been fine since. No need to take the bumper off as you can access the pump from the nearside front wheel arch

Cheers.

Elsawin says you have to disconnect the suspension strut (Presumably dropping the wishbone) and then remove the wheel arch liner.

Is that the way you did it ?

On my vrs I changed it by removing the pass side wheel and arch liner. Was easy as that.

I'm getting real lazy nowadays.

Ideally. I'd like to take nothing else off but the pump.

Would you say its possible to put your hand between the ww reservoir and the leading inside edge of the wheel arch and feel for /use a mirror to locate the pump ?

I presume there's just one leccy supply wire and the one output tube to the washers to disconnect and then pop-out the pump with its grommet from the side of the reservoir ?

Does the replacement pump come with a new grommet ?

Hi Nick - did it a while back - steering on full right lock, undo two or three screws on the front of the liner aloing the arch and two from the undertray and then bend the liner back to get access. I wedged mine back using a short piece of wood and then it's easy to get to as it's hard up against the liner so no need for a mirror etc.

Single pump with a directional valve to control flow to front or rear depending upon direction of spin of motor and two tubes - one to front and one to rear washers. Single electric connection with the usual nail breaking VW clip. No grommet on pump as that stays on the bottle and the pump just clips in.

You may find that it's just a connection that has come loose or a partial blockage in the valve (I've had to clean mine before) but new pumps are only about £8 - just beware you may get one like mine that spins in the opposite direction to the OE one which meant I had to run a new pipe for the rear washer into the engine bay as the OE pipes were too shprt to allow me to swap thier positions over!

If all is well you'll have it done in half an hour if that!

VMT Skomaz.

4 x screws and push and wedge a piece of plastic sounds like something I can deal with.

Certainlly better than paying the dealer £60-80.

My saloon doesn't have rear wiper/washers, so that shouldn't present a problem if I need to get a new motor.

I presume this particular component is so low level that it won't require electronic registration with the EMU.

Postscript

Remembering my old VW Golf Mk 1 where the simple rectangular washer bottle was easily accessible through the offisde bonnet space, I can't understand why they would go to such lengths to hide it away on the Fabia and also make it such a complicatedly shaped moulding (Comes in at £35 new, £17.50 used !) ?
