Want it to show mph

Featured Replies

Quite agree :)

+1. The little line exactly midway between the 20 and 40 figures is 30mph (ish). Even if you change the digital display so that it reads in mph, and you religiously stick to a digitally indicated '30' you'll still be doing 'ish'.

  • The round dial on the left shows your speed in mph.

I wish I'd thought of that answer in the past!

  • It does however show it in a rather approximate way where the speed in figures is of more use in following limits. The speedo isn't clearly marked for the common UK limits as those responsible for the

There is a train of thought that says that a dial is faster to read than a numerical display, because you have to actually READ a numerical display, whereas with a dial you can get a sense of the reading just from a glance, determined by the relative angle of the needle compared to reference marks. For this reason you don't NEED a '30' mark as you don't really read it anyway, it's just a comfort factor. Furthermore, if you're accelerating or decelerating a constantly-changing speed read-out is not great to read and the inevitable refresh resolution will mean it is always lagging the real speed anyway.

I drove a car with nothing BUT a digital speedo readout for 3 years and I'll admit I got used to it very quickly, but it does take a proper LOOK to read it, rather than a peripheral glance.

They don't...its just that many people don't need ANY readout in KPH.

And?

I don't need a KPH readout either, unless I cross Le Manche.

And as for the lack of 30, etc being written on the speedo, so what? There are lines there indicating the relevant points, and to honest if you want a digital readout then use the KPH ones any way:

30mph = 48kph

50mph = 80kph

etc.

As I've said before, the same speedo system is found in several VAG vehicles, but the only Forum that has lots of complaints about it is this one. Why?

And I totally agree with what Weasley says above; an analogue dial is quicker to "read" than a digital one.

Or the Irish Sea.

If someone wants a MPH readout instead of the KPH then that is their choice, as everyone is entitled to their own preference. Personally, I can't be bothered to have someone hook up a VAG PC and change it to Australia settings, but if you could do it yourself then I would. By the way, I am very well aware that 30mph is the 2nd line past 20mph but I still prefer 30/50/70 etc as I suspect many other owners would.

When the Yeti actually arrives (!) I expect to get used to it fairly quickly by the 'relative angle' mentioned by Weasley. I fully expect problems with m'lady's attitude to it, though, at least for the first few years.

The thing is, as most realise the speedo under reads, so whe you compare your speed with one of these roadside digital displays, when they show you are doing 30 you are 1 mm or is it 2 mm past the small insignificant mark for 30 on the speedo. Whereas with the digital mph display I know 33 mph will display "thank you fo doing 30 " on above said signs. I for one agree I didn't see the point of changing, but once you have it, I find the digital display so much easier to read.

My sentiments exactly.

Mmmm ... I tend to see those roadside digital speed displays as a challenge. "You are doing 90mph" YES!!!

Hope you don't run a child over then if it's in a built up area - 30 limit means 30 - period!

PS: I know you are only joking (I hope).

You don't "run children over" at 90mph ... you send them into orbit! It's called "a teacher's revenge"

The speedo is a stupidly calibrated device. It not only lacks clear markings for three important UK limits but mine is pointlessly marked to 160mph. If the scale were only 0-130 it would indicate any speed any Yeti sold would even theoretically reach and the scale would allow easier at a glance indication of any useful speed.

As Graham, somewhat patronisingly, suggests I can do the mental arithmetic or memorise the KPH equivalents. I suspect I could learn the relevant feet per second or nautical miles per hour equivalents but prefer a clear display in the measurement in which our road limits are expressed. I also know that the speed display -digital or otherwise- is not accurate. From my Garmin I have a clear notion of the extent of that irritating discrepancy and therefore know that the true road speed is lower and by how much.

On a motorway when approaching a police car travelling at less than the posted limit I am able to cruise past without fear of offending at an indicated 75 mph.

The speedo is not a good device.

Could not have put it better myself.

This will run and run ... the speedo is perfectly fine. There is a pretty little white line exactly half way between 20 and 40, another between 40 and 60 and another between 60 and 80 which perfectly represent the 30/50/70 limits. If you're looking at the speedo long enough to actually register the numbers, then your eyes are off the road for too long. If you drive any car long enough you know simply by the angle of the needle what speed you're doing, close enough for any speed gun, police car, or simply to obey the law.

Thank you Bob. Agreed.

And my comment about 30/48 etc has been said by me so many times now.................................

Not come across this and I have done loads.

Are you sure they knew what they were doing?

Well they were kind enough to try! I might ask someone else if I every get a spare minute. Got used to it now after 3 months of Yeti ownership. It's going in for a service in a month or so, my local dealer reckons they have the kit. Let's see how they get on.

Most dealers will have nothing to do with this sort of "mod" so well done in finding one.

oooh my question has caused a hot debate I see !!

A GPS unit rarely displays the correct speed. It might if it is a level road with a clear sky. So, some roads in the US of A qualify, but very few in the UK.

Saying to a judge ' I ignored the speedo in my car and relied on my GPS' will not go down very well.

We all know the speedo is not accurate, but it isn't that far out

I must confess when I see the speed signs displaying your speed, I have found almost all around here to be within about 1mph of my speedo.

  • 2 weeks later...

On golfs you can change the kmh to the outside temp and also display the speed in the fuel computer area by changing the clocks to ROW (rest of world) - once done you can change the temp Barack to knh in the fuel computers settings menu at will.

I'll let you know when I pick mine up on the 1st of September ;-)

As has been said many, many, many times......if you want to display MPH then the ONLY way is to set the car to "Australia"......nothing else!!

What can be done to Golfs from the past bears no relation to what has to be done to a Yeti!!

You also have to get used to driving upside down, and if the car has sat nav it will call you 'cobber'.

And regardless of what you select on the radio it only plays Rolf Harris
