Mobile Phone Insurance (which one to get)

Featured Replies

I have just purchased a Sony Xperia Arc S and because it is so thin am looking at mobile insurance but wanted to ask what you guys would recommend. At the moment I am looking at Protect my Bubble and Gadget Cover from the go compare website.

Any recommendations would be appreciated as all of the reviews dont seem to have any people who have had experience of claiming etc..

I got the phone from Phones 4u and they want £12.99 per month for the insurance. Just trying to compare them.

ask your bank first if your phone is covered in your bank account we are with the co-op and we have free phone and holiday insurance included in are account.

I have mobile insurance with my free with my bank account (Lloyds TSB)

Will be covered on your home insurance policy anyway if you have "personal possessions" and accidental damage cover. Provided you have a home insurance policy that is.

Which bumps your premiums up and has a hefty excess.

Dedicated tech cover usually has a low excess and in the case of phones will cover for unauthorised use during loss as well. Some even cover warranty issues and will ship a reconditioned or loan phone next day and sort your repair.

Justin, if on monthly contract, does your network not offer insurance? Most will for upto £10/month for anything non Apple.

Thanks for the help, I purchased the phone sim free, I am on a sim only plan which is a 30 day rolling contract. I did contact them about insurance but they told me that I would of had to have purchased the handset from them and the insurance would of have to be taken out at the point of sale.

Swings and roundabouts - My bank also doesn't cover mobile phones and my house insurance excess is set high so wouldn't be worth considering that option.

Not sure about the protect my bubble (doesn't sound good for starters) or the gadget cover both seem cheap at £6 a month but its the going through an actual claim with a company that counts. In other words they will soon take the payments but what are they like if a claim had to be made.

Thanks gadgetman for the links, makes good reading, thanks to the others in this thread also. Top advice :)

I'll be in the same boat soon, and the forum link above makes grim reading.

Claiming on home insurance will usually be cheaper than taking out separate insurance. I don't know about you but my excess is only £50. I made a £1200 claim in one insurance period and come renewal my insurance cost actually went down so don't automatically assume that your insurance will go up.

Why pay for cover twice just to save claiming on your house insurance 'to save bumping up the premiums'. You have cover, use it if you need it. Even if the premium does go up, i very much doubt it would rise by £120 a year (average cost of mobile phone insurance a year).

The cost of insuring 2 smartphones was a lot more on our house insurance than our joint account.

For £12/month we get two smartphones insured with Bank of Scotland against accident, theft and loss (£50 excess) along with AA breakdown with home start, a discount on our home insurance and some other fairly worthless (to us) "perks".

A Phone is a personal possession, i have personal possession cover away from the home so therefore my phones are covered in the price of the policy just the same as my watch, gold chain, camera, laptop etc.

Have to check mine, but I'm sure electronic gadgets were only covered if declared.

I phoned my insurance to check when i declared my new Omega Watch the other week as i forgot to check when i changed insurance companies earlier in the year. I asked about my camera and phone as i only have £500 luggage cover on my travel insurance (my camera kit alone is about £2.5k!) and they confirmed that i was covered anywhere in the world as long as it wasn't left unattended at the time it went missing/broke etc.

Justin, if you take a paid for bank account you'll get the cover like the others have, I think it's about £6 a month with Lloyds.

Don't get phone insurance. Just put £10 a month into a saving account or something then if you phone breaks use that money to fix it or get a new one. If the phone doesn't break then you still have the money!

What happens if you loose it or break it after 2 months? £20 isn't going to get you much! There is a manager in our place lost is Iphone in Brighton when on holiday a few weeks ago and he had loads of hassle with his bank who insured it. I don't think they actually paid out in the end. The reasons they gave were ridiculous.

I would rather just get buy a new phone outright if that happened than give money away to a company that you probably will never need to use. I have never lost or damaged a phone in 10 years.

Might put it onto the house contents as an item used away from the home etc., The only thing I am concerned about it being on the house insurance is if something did happen and I had to claim it would be how long would they take to process and would they be quicker at sorting it out compared to a dedicated policy.

How does that work,I thought you only got that if you took out silver or above?

As above. I get mine with my bank account. It's the halifax ultimate reward. It costs £15 a month but then I you get £5 a month back if you pay in £1000 or more a month.

I also get AA breakdown cover and travel insurance which is really handy.

If you add an account holder on you also get the benefits for both of you for the price of one.

Mug :p

You get a normal reward account - £5 to you

Partner gets a normal reawrd account - £5 to partner

You both get a joint ultimate reward account - £5 to share but a total of £15 which pays the monthly fee ;)

That's a lot of money shuffling but I guess it would save £15 a month!

Account is just in my name at moment anyway with just my salary.

Looking at combining all finances soon as getting sick of transferring money all the time to cover bills and purchases.

Get a reward credit card each and that's another £10 a month and you'd still have mobile phone insurance (back on topic)
