I scratched my car!

Featured Replies

Last night while driving I T-boned an Audi A6.He was trying to make an U turn over the continuous marking lines+he was drunk. This is the result! The girl in the other car was a little bit injured, but nothing serious. These front and knee airbag were perfect...almost no scratch beside both my hands and legs being burnt from their explosion.

And if you wonder,I am from Romania and the Audi was RHD bought from UK...so be careful when you go to other countries.

As you say no one badly hurt and the cars can be fixed.

Was he insured?

Ouch!

So I assume he was arrested for being drunk?

I just did a search to see if that car is insured... It's showing that it is NOT currently insured...

The number plate is hard to see but I think it is R94 TGM?

Phil

I hope your Police throw the book at him! :wall: Glad you are ok  ( and a bit more than a scratch

Presumably even if he was insured if he was drunk wouldn't that invalidate his insurance?

Probably...

That's one reason why I'm with Direct Line.

Phil

Actually your insurance company would pay out to the other party if you were drunk and then take you to court to recoup their costs.

Which in this case will not happen as that car is not currently insured!

Indeed,it's pretty sad,he was drunk + the insurance was probably printed at home or something because it turned out it doesn't exist.Right now the car is on it's way to the dealer for repairs and my "full insurance" will pay for it and after that they will sue the other driver to get the money.Overall he is a big trouble, probably a few years in prison plus about 8000 to 10.000 pounds to pay to my insurance company.Regarding the car...it will take a while until full repair,1-2 months, because the entire front axle+everything linked to it is cracked.

Oh well. It is a lump of metal and he's lucky he didn't kill someone or himself!

He probably thought he could get away with driving over there without insurance as they wouldn't be able to check so easily. He probably did have insurance and then cancelled and didn't send back the insurance certificate.

I still cannot comprehend how some people think it is ok to drive after having a drink!

The thread title was a bit of an understatement!!!

Glad you are safe.

Just out of interest, what sort of impact speed was it?

It was at about 50-55mph,and after the impact I thrown him about 23meters(75feet) according to the police measurements, right on the grass. It was a fraction of a second, someone else avoided him and I saw him when I had about 2-3meters from him,so I couldn't break only a little. In my oppinion the car looks great. The dealer also did some investigation and it looks like the chassis wasn't touched at all,so they will be able to fully repair it.

Wow! very sorry for your trouble, but if the damage to your car was from a 50-55mph impact then be glad you were driving the car you were, judging from the impact photos.

Reminds me of the time as an impoverished young man I bought one of the early Lada imports...great car...I was in the police at the time and had been working 36 hours straight. Got off duty and was heading home and within 5 minutes of the house I dozed off at the wheel. Hit a neighbour's Cortina estate at about 20-25mph. Result? one nearside headlight broken, slight damage to bonnet and punctured radiator (no such thing as airbags then). And the Cortina? Pushed through a hedge and broke the subframe. It was a write off.

I'm pleased you came away with minor injuries (a bit alarming tho) and hope you are back on the road and compensated soon.

I remember having the legal speed limit which was 60mph,and then I instantly t-boned him.I also read the police report and the impact speed was indeed around 50-55mph.I still can't seem to find a good explanation why my car looks this good,I can only think that it's just a great car!I also found out 2 other things. The car indeed has the knee airbag(I searched the car but never found it),and the second one is regarding the sunglasses.I was always afraid that airbags might crush the sunglasses and hurt my eyes, but they were intact after the impact.

Here are a 2 pictures of the brake marks on the ground(not all are from this accident) and the other car.

My other half had a prang in her works Vauxhall Combo van a few years ago. She had a fantastic Vauxhall badge 'tattoo' where the centre of the steering wheel hit her arm when the air bag depliyed. Took months for the mark to disappear!

Glad you're OK. It's a good job the other driver was in an A6, as a lessor car would have provided less side impact protection to the occupants.

Out of curiosity, in which part of Romania did this incident occur? I'm driving our Hymer to Eforie-Sud in four weeks time and am hoping I don't encounter such idiotic driving. A fully loaded 3.5 ton Hymer in the same scenario would have obliterated that A6!

Glad youre OK. I think most of the energy of the impact was absorbed by the weakest part of the audi. The sides are weaker than a front or rear. That is why your car still looks relatively good.

Hope your wounds heal quickly, the car can be repaired ;)

And for the other driver: :finger: Hope he gets what he deserves (driving drunk is an absolute no go)

I think you effectively pool cue'd him so the initial smack pushed him before crushing your front, it's what Indy Car racers do, it's better to use momentum to shove the obstruction than to try and stop and change the physics of the impact, car looks kinda familiar to me, bluddy Brit's abroad eh :giggle:

Was he British or was he foreign and on his way to the Balkans to sell it, old German car's are quite desired in places like Albania and there is a market for them.

Veloplus it was in the SW part, but don't worry, many people imagine this country as being full of gipsy and bad people. As I traveled the entire Europe, from Norway/UK to Greece I can tell you that Romania is a very beautiful country compared to others..Let me know if I can help you with choose the roads or anything else while in Romania.

Indeed it was a great thing the other car was an A6,it had those airbags which made the difference.

Actually it was a person from my town driving it.Here taxes are pretty high compared to our salaries. For example for an Audi A6 3.0 TDI from 2004 you have to pay around 3000 euros so that you can legally register/drive it + around 500 euros every year as a tax(not including insurance). So thinking our salaries are around 300-400 euros,it's much easier to drive one already registered in another country,so that's why here you will see many cars from UK and Bulgary.
