Top box dimensions?

Featured Replies

I am looking to buy a mount for my TomTom SatNav that I can put on the dashboard. (I hate all the messy rings on my windscreen - plus it is a tell-tale sitg to crooks that there is likely to be a satnav in the car - probably in the glove compartment).

I have a Yeti on order, but want to get a holder now so that I can use it in my current car.

My idea is to put the mount into the 'top box' on the Yeti dashboard (my Yeti is the SE so will have a lid to the top-box) so I want to buy one that will fit it.

Could some kind person please measure the top box for me - length, width and depth please.

Does anyone have experience of using the top box for that purpose (a pic would be great) ?

Also - can the TomTom (even if not the suction holder) be stored within the top-box when it isnt in use?

Many thanks

It's not quite a rectangle so is a little narrower at the back than the front - 200mm to 220mm. There's a section between the hinge mounts that goes back further, so the hinge post to front distance is 130mm, and the back to front is 170mm. the section between the posts is 130mm wide - If you look at Great Yeti's guide - https://docs.google.com/fileview?id=0B_PHfAZM-GYCNmJlODU2ZDktMmJjOS00OTMyLThkMWQtYTQ5YTk5ZWE0OWYw&hl=en_GB you'll see what I mean (hopefully). Overall depth is around 40mm, which would be 2-3mm more if the rubber mat is removed. The base slopes up towards the front to make it easier to retrieve stuff, so you've less depth in the closest 25mm.

Currently I have a Bracketron nav-mat sat on top of the box - my phone holder won't stick to the lid directly for any length of time. That's just the backup sat-nav - the primary one is usually located on the passenger seat :giggle:

If you check out the YETI Technical Guides section, you will find this has already been done, and a guide suggesting how to is here: Installing a Sat Nav in a Skoda Yeti

The Guide has all the pictures and information to help you achieve this and if you need any help with the USB Power Circuit etc just let me know.

Many thanks. That looks like a good solution - although to be honest I think the fitting of the electrics would be beyond me, so I would need to use the TomTom supplied power lead (like I do at the moment when I have it stuck to the windscreen).

Hopefully there is a socket (cigarette lighter type) that I could use somewhere in the front of the car? Whereabouts is it? Is it convenient for SatNav use?

(I know there is one in the boot - but that would require rather a long lead!)

It's just in front of the gear stick, on the passenger side of the central section. As such a lead to the dash can be a bit of an issue, particularly if it's the spiral type. I have a socket splitter on a short spiral lead, so now that's plugged in and the bulky splitter sits in the cubby box behind the gear stick. From there the phone lead just curves around the bulkhead and doesn't get in the way of anything. As others have said it seems obvious to put in USB charge points at places like the top box and the rear mirror given so many gadgets are powered by them now.

I'm planning a hinged mount to permanently fit a TomTom inside the dash-top box. One thing that concerns me a bit is that the location is a prime spot for getting roasted by the summer sun (when it comes!) with the car parked up. The manual on page 83 does warn against leaving heat sensitive objects here (the handbook warns against rather a lot of things in my opinion !) I am going to experiment with a piece of that foil covered bubble wrap they sell for insulating lofts, which I can spread out when needed to reflect the heat.

Inspired by Great Yeti's work, I wired in the cradle power supply on my Garmin, but used the Garmin 12v plug and a socket bought from eBay, powered by a piggyback adapter in the driver's side fusebox. Fairly easy. Pics here, at post #71:
