High Mileage Skoda Fabia VRS (04) - Record of Costs

Recommended Posts

I thought that this may be a useful thread for other high mileage VRS owners, especially as they are now getting older.

I have a 2004 Skoda Fabia VRS in black (ASZ engine), now at 148k miles, of which 108k are in my ownership. In terms of performance I 'think' its standard...

I do about 28k miles per year, almost all motorway work. The car is serviced every 10k miles (alternate inspection+oil and then just oil service). Most work has been done at a VAG independent specialist near my work in Cardiff.

The performance is still spot-on, still looks nice, a few minor trim rattles. Still really like the car (despite recent costs!)

I bought it for £8000 in May 2008, 40k miles on the clock. Trading in a 2002 Seat Toledo SE TDi 110 at 103k miles.

  • Coolant leak at 63k miles, head gasket test, coolant bottle change, cupra console bushes fitted after creaking, £150 total
  • Boost pipe failed, new one fitted at 63k, £70
  • Timing belt change, inc., waterpump, £200
  • Cruise control fitted by main dealer, £210
  • Pressure tested cooling system to find leak at 90k, £15
  • Replaced coolant reservoir again at 95k, £24
  • Head gasket failure, cylinder head skimmed, new head gasket fitted, oil change, at 95k miles, £590
  • Timing belt change, inc. waterpump and replacement fan speed resistor at 130k miles, £350
  • Front pads and discs, 135k miles, £180 (originals worn out)
  • Rear pads and discs, 143k miles, £150 (originals too rusty for MOT)
  • Replacement new Borg Warner turbo at 145k miles, £520 from Turbo Dynamics
  • Turbo fitting, £400
  • Wiring loom break linked to alternator, fixed at 147k miles, £34
  • Replacement new AC compressor, receiver dryer, re-gas aircon, £540

Other stuff:

  • Oil Services have been around £65
  • Full inspection services + oil + filters have been £210 to £260
  • Blown lots of bulbs
  • Replaced lots of tyres, around £65 to £85, almost always from Camskill (Toto T1R, then Uniroyal Rainsport 2), £10 to fit
  • Kept the seats clean with Autoglym hi-foam interior shampoo, £6, ebay
  • The doors have never leaked, the place I bought it off said it had been done in the past, no record of it though
  • I fitted a bluetooth, USB, SD, mic, aftermarket stereo at 140k miles, £60 inc. bits and bobs.

Next on the list is:

  • Replace front passenger door speaker, £125-ish
  • Re-paint spoiler. Considering doing it myself, would rather pay someone.
  • Try and fix about one million stone chips and some swirls and scratches.

Stone chips are just God's way of telling you that you drive too close to the car in front on motorways...... !

Good thread.

Mines similar to yours but MUCH cheaper on the servicing items, mines BLT 2006 107K currently

Front and rear brakes totally replaced. Whatever this cost for Pagid bits from ECP about £120 all in I think

Timing belt at Unit18, £80

Cruise control, fitted by me, within few weeks of new (at bulkhead using proper terminal, not breaking the warranty). £60 fitted

Wiring loom break linked to alternator, fixed by myself

Fault with coolant overflow tank/sender, £13 and self fitted.

Main dealer services up to and past warranty but then done some services myself using OEM parts, some at other places like Unit18.

Other than that my costs have only been non essentials, which I think should be separate from servicing agenda !

e.g. just bought colour concept recaros, £210 for seats+£39 for donor seats

£136 for sachs shocks all around, £130 for new H&R springs

17" spiders + new tyres (wheels were around £200 ish)

  • 2 weeks later...

Currently at 186,000 miles. A few more repairs since I last updated (replacement intercooler [last one split] and drop links)

Now I need to fix a broken rear washer (rusted rear motor)

New front tyres tomorrow, Uniroyal Rainsport 3
