First Impressions Yeti 2.0 TDi SE

Featured Replies

Hi all,

we finally took delivery of our Yeti 2.0 TDi 4 weeks ago and after last weeks foray to France now have 2100 miles up. Overall we are very pleased with the car but as usual with any new car there is a few niggles. First off our supplying dealer had set up the car for the variable servicing which for a car which will do about 8000 miles a year is not correct. We have been told that it is best to leave it this way and it will be changed at the first service to the fixed 10,000 mile / annual service. The central locking (and unlocking) only works on the drivers door unless you press the appropriate key button twice, a feature I have never had on any other car and frankly can't see the point of and apparently is a dealer visit to alter to "all doors". I find that the gearchange action is lovely apart from 4th to 5th when if I move the leaver fully over the gate to the right it bawks when moving forward and slightly dog legs left before moving forward into 5th. Don't know if anything can be done about that one. I am finding the brakes slightly strange in that the initial "bite" and retardation is good but as speed decreases the retardation falls off and heavier pedal pressure is required. (The front discs do look a tad on the small side for a car of this size and weight.) I am finding that the car is just about able to hold 30mph in 4th gear and 5th is a no no at anything under 50, still the engine is probably very tight and the overall gearing does seen to be on the tall side. I changed the Engine Oil and Filter yesterday (yes I know, it's an overkill and not really necessary) as I am from the "old school" and just can't help myself !!. The filter is a bit of a bugger to get at requiring removal of some plumbing which is in the way and getting the element off the housing cap required a call to the dealers to query the exact technique. The whole filter assembly does seem over complicated when the far simpler scew on canister type is widely used elsewhere. We where surprised to find that our two favourite suit cases will not fit into the boot as it was not a problem with out previous car, a Ford Focus (we opted for the spare wheel) so a re-think with packing arrangements will be necessary before our forthcoming cruise holiday. A strange thing I have noticed which hopefully someone can throw light on is that the windscreen wipers give a slight "jump" whenever the ignition is turned off, strange one that !!. Other than that everything seems fine and I really enjoy driving our new Yeti. The handling is great (apart from the jiggley ride over poor surfaces which includes most british roads, France was wonderful!!) and she really hangs on around fast sweepers. Will report back after another couple of thousand miles.

You can change that yourself using the Maxidot menu.

I think that is more "you" than a problem with the car. I haven't noticed mine doing it.

This is normal, and is the wipers going into a "park" mode. It is supposedly to stop them sticking to the screen. It is covered in the Handbook.

I've never noticed any problem with the brakes. I find them very efficient, and that includes having a 1100kg caravan hooked on.

It would be useful to know which diesel you have; 110, 140 or 170bhp? Also what specification? All those variables can affect how your questions are answered.

You may be "old school" but I think your changing the oil and filter at 2100 miles is a total waste of time and money. Modern oils and vehicles have changed a lot in the last decade. I wonder what your dealer would say about it, as technically doing the work yourself could result in a query over your warranty.

Yes I would agree with the oil change thing..... Very touchy some dealers about warranty etc.

Two comments...

You may be experiencing MBA (mechanical brake assist) when you first use the brakes. This is in case you have not pressed them hard enough straight off. This effect only last a short period requiring more pressure from your left foot thereafter.

The wiper movement is to alter the park postion of the wiper to prolong its life.

I also found the unlocking of driver's door only with 1 press of remote annoying, but I suppose could be a useful feature in certain situations. However, thanks to the good folks here on the forum, soon altered in no time on the Maxidot to unlock all doors/boot with 1 press (no trip to dealer necessary). Agree with Llanigraham on all his other comments as I cannot fault the diesel (mine is a 110 2wd).

Oh that's why the wipers do that is it? ;) I meant to ask. I've worked in IT for 20+ years so reading manuals not really my thing! My 2.0 SE (110 ,model) now has 7k on it in 3.5 months. That's commuting to a client 100 miles return a day plus running around. It's only the 2WD model, but managed to get me out of the world's muddiest field (at Eastnor Mountain Mayhem) with TC turned off and home through some sill high flooding where other cars had conked out.

Aside from a strange knocking sound on first acceleration of the day (from under middle of car) and something loose in a vent that occasionally rattles, nothing to report. Great car, fun to drive, 110 engine is pokier than I expected esp now it's opened up a bit, comes up clean with a weekly wash, returning 45+ to the gallon, great stereo and love the panoramic sunroof. Not that I've opened it much!

Boot is quite small but with middle seat out can still get 3m RC gliders in there an with seats in family of four and stuff to go away for a weekend. Even my wife loves it and she hated my old x-trail.

Can't believe it'll be off for it's first (fixed duration) service come September!

Glad you are liking your Yeti.

If you want to update your brakes, and you have a CR140, then you can fit the 312 mm dia brakes from a vRS Octavia/CR170 by just replacing the discs and carriers. The callipers are the same.

my CR140 Yeti has a remap, like a few on here. I believe it was one of the first to get a remap (after Octygone).

My Yeti goes in to have them this coming week. I bought the parts from www.skodaparts.com (Bickerton Skoda)

See this thread: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/index.php?/topic/243096-140-TDi-Remap---end-results?

Without checking the brake technical guide in the technical guide section, I don't know if the CR110 can just as easily be upgraded.

Referring to the two clicks to unlock all doors thing, this is a security aid in as much that in some situations it may be preferable to just unlock the driver's door ie woman alone, dark car park, loitering undesireables! and come on, how many nanoseconds does it take to press the button a second time? Perhaps I just have a slightly higher annoyance threshold!

3m? That's impressive (I'm up to @1m max wingspan on my rc models). Presume they also join you in the front unless that is 2x1.5m wing halves ;-)

Sorry 1.6m each wing :) A one piece wing of that size'd be on the roof!
