Lack of knowledge on turbos

Featured Replies

As the title says I have lack of knowledge in this area!

I'm looking at buying a dump or flutter valve for my vrs and was wondering which ones people are using out there on their own cars!

I've read that you can get re-circulating dump valves so you don't lose the pressure? Is this correct?

Thanks in advance

Dump valves dont do anything on diesels from what I can gather. Something to do with no throttle body and how the VNT turbo`s work IIRC. I`v never tried one myself, a mate tried one and it just acted like a big boost leak once he was mapped. Others might have a bit more insight.

I don't want a dump valve for performance reasons so could I fit a re-circ bov?

Surely this would do the same job as a dump valve without realising boost pressure?

the idea of a dump valve is to get rid of excess boost, not so you don't lose pressure.

on a petrol it releases boost so the turbo is ready to spool again, and doesn't have backpressure stalling it between lifting off and powering back on.

im not sure a diesel turbo works the same tho.

and as said ya get no gains from it. spend money elsewhere on a worthwhile mod :-)

The valves on petrol turbos are to stop the turbo from stalling as the air would have no where to go when you come off the throttle. Otherwise that pressure would stall the turbo as that's the only way the air could go.

Diesels don't have throttles, so you don't need the valve.

Simples :)

As said, dump valves are pointless on a VNT diesel and sound dump anyway.

From what I see even on here, bit too late for that!

It's very common for newbies, like yourself, to ask this question. I normally explain it, but you can have read of this explanation : TDIClub FAQ - Blow-off valves or BOV or similar The rest of the FAQ is very useful as well.

I believe you can fit an electronic operated dump valve, this will produce the sound of one but will not do anything to the performance of the car. I have even heard they actually decrease performance slightly when gear changing, and could even damage the turbo, as it dumps more pressure than it needs to.

Got an iPhone?

Get the iDump app ;)

It uses the motion sensors on your phone, and when you change gear, it goes Tssssss

Ace.

I havnt seen one fabia on here with a dump/bov.

Only way of getting one fitted and working correctly is the electrical operated one that derv doctor sells, but its very pricey for something that doesnt gain performance and sounds abit 90s.

I've seen a fair few questions about this over the years, and you only need to look around to see more and more "undesirables" buying Fabia vRS's

ohh so you mean the actual type of people buying them and the mods they do not just the dump valve in general?

Correct! :)

Actually, I have a sensible question about Turbos.

What is one of these 'Hybrid' Turbos that everybody goes on about? What's so special about them and the difference to a 'normal' Turbo?

Just means it's a hybrid of two different turbos, normally

as said its two diff turbos merged normaly. ..stronger internals bin the main reason.

nothing to do with dump valves, just able to cope with higher boost pressures, for longer periods of time.

As well as ensuring that the compressor doesn't fly to bits in the chuttering vibrations caused by trying to stuff BOOST! through a now closed or closing hole... (petrol applications only).... Or snapping the turbo shaft...

A well designed diesel turbo system won't need a BOV. Though one could be seen in some high power applications as a safety measure... Used purely to prevent overboost and the risk of damage to expensive engine parts.

With electric BOV's, you could set them to open at a certain PSi to release boost and save cooking an engine. But you'd have to want a hell of an engine before you got to that stage.
