(Almost) Non-drip tailgate.

Featured Replies

Well, with all this lovely summery weather we've been having, I noticed that whenever I opened the tailgate, a whole load of water would empty off the sides of the glass and into the boot. Not overly helpful. Anyway was in Hailfrauds the other week, and picked up some clear plastic door-edge protector. This was duely cut and fitted to the tailgate, not just to the glass, but to the metal lip below it.

I now get very very few drips into the boot when I open the tailgate. It's not 100%, but far far better than before.

Have you got any pics?

Sounds good....Had enough of mine after a week in Germany!

Agree pics would be great as this sounds interesting to see.

you could also try treating with rain x or Carlack glass sealant, the water beads off the glass.

the water beading actually makes it worse.

Will check the pics when on pc!

Agreed. That was "Effort 1" earlier in the year. Turns the drips into a torrent! :(

Although would probably work a lot better on the more upright tailgate on the estates.

Thanks for the pics and a good fix.

off to halfords later then, nearly had water all over my sub last week (not good)

Never had this problem with my estate.

With thanks to RainbowFire I bought some in Halfords the other week on a visit to the UK and whacked it on.

Did you stick it on the lower edge as well Fubar?

I'm off to halfords later to y to cure exactly the same problem.

I was looking at the rear window and noticed the rain channel around the bottom of the glass.

Poured water down the window then watched what happens when the tailgate is opened.

The water runs towards the edges of the tailgate and straight out of the channel into the boot.

Taking rainbowfires cure one step further,

I'm going to try the door strip on both the glass and the metal edge underneath, but mitre the two ends so they but right up and close the ends of the channel off.

A bit of clear silicon should help.

A bit of an update to this:

My original material (the clear plastic) eventually kept falling off - I kept finding the strips sitting in the gully on the bodywork instead of on the tailgate.  So I trundled back to Halfords to get some new stuff for the pincely sum of £7.99. However, sitting beside it was the chrome effect strip. This is a more substancial product, for the same money. So I've put that on instead. Visually not a problem as I have a silver car anyway and the topside of the strip is only 5mm - so not a lot to see.

Now that it's raining again, it won't be long before I'll know if this "upgrade" was a good move or not ;)

Same here. But it kept falling off, particularly when being washed.

Got fed up with it an it's in the bin.
