Turbo sounds horrible

Featured Replies

Had my turbo blow just over a week ago, had a friend of mine, whose a mechanic strip it down, which answered our questions which was that the impeller was shattered and bearings and shafter were all loose. Took it to have it repaired which came back looking brand spanking new. Was really pleased. Fitted it last night and tried it but didn't really push it and sounded fine, with it just starting to spool up. Was happy that the car was back up and running....

Today I have been to work and back and yet again not really pushed it and was fine.

Tonight I have done a longer drive using the motorways and obviously putting my foot down abit more. As soon as I hit around 2,200 onwards the turbo sounds raspy and sounds like it is sucking in air from elsewhere. I've checked all the pipes that I could see from just popping the bonnet, but I'm no mechanic and my mate won't be able to look at it till tomorrow night.

Can anyone assist me in what I need to be looking for?

Cheers

Matt

Did you replace all the gaskets ?

Yep all gaskets were replaced

can you get it on some ramps and check from underneath? Check all pipes are holding.

Not tonight unfortunately. We are going to look under the car again tomorrow. The turbo is still boosting even though it makes this noise. Its not boosting like it did before though. So makes me think that there is a leak somewhere.

Sounds like a boost leak somewhere.

Should be easy to fix once you've identified which pipe is not connected right.

Thanks for the replys. That has settled my mind abit now

This sounds like what I had my manifold had somehow come loose on one side, only about a turn but it was enough to make it sound like what you are having

Just managed to limp the car home. Still sounds terrible. Will update tomorrow what we find when we get the bottom panel off.

The car is wanting to boost, but just isn't boosting to what it used to.

Found the problem which was the Intercooler pipe that goes from the Intercooler to the turbo has a hole in the top rubber hose. And noticed a slight oil leak at the bottom of the hose. So wanting to replace the whole hose. Anyone know what this hose is called or a part number for it to quote? And will it be a part I will have to get from Skoda or could I get it from parts places?

I'd call it a boost air pipe or a charge air pipe, if you explain it runs from the intercooler to the turbo, they should be able to identify it! I'd personally presume its a dealer only part, but always worth a ring and ask a few places!

If you PM a pic of the pipe you need to replace I mighthave what you are after. Ive recently fitted a FMIC so the pipe is redundant.

Unfortunately I can't. It's not the pipe that you can see from just popping the bonnet. It's the one underneath that goes from the turbo to the intercooler

So its the pipe going to the bottom of the cooler. 90 degree iirc?

  • Author

It's the one nearest to the turbo

Ok sorry if In being at tad thick are tou on about the rubber hose thats attached to the turbo going to the cooler. Sorry :/

From what I saw there was a hose that connected to the intercooler, that bits fine, but in that same line there is another rubber hose that connects to the turbo. My mate did it for me who is a mechanic so I don't really know how to explain it

After changing the "high pressure" pipe I think it's called (a 90 degree that connects the turbo from the intercooler) everything is back to normal with the car. I don't think it's a KKK turbo anymore thoughs, looks more like a garrett and does seem slightly different in power, or is that just me?

  • 3 weeks later...

This pipe went on mine just after I put my hybrid on. Thought I would post a pic for anyone looking back at this topic.
