HELP rear brake Calliper Removal.

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm currently fitting groved disks and a new set of mintex pads to my vRS but i can't for the life of me figure out how to remove the rear callipers to get the new disks in or change the pads. the bolts on the calliper are round not hexagonal like the fronts, so I can't get a spanner on them to get them off, I have looked at my haynes manual and as usual the images make it look like a piece of p**s using a ring spanner. But there is nowhere for the spanner to grip onto on the bolts??? advice will be very apreciated as my car is sat on axle stands on the drive looking sorry for itself.

Do you have a pic of the bolts? Fromt what I remember I just used a socket set but had to get a lump of wood and slowly tap them backward to get them off.

you need to take the rear callipers off dude!

hit the disc free, and wiggle it out, i changed both my rear discs and pads without removing the calliper as mine were solid.

if i rememebr correctly it was an allen key bolt.

There are two allen key bolts holding the bracket onto the axle.......there are also two hex bolts holding the caliper onto the bracket.... B)

Can't see the posted images, but from the photos in Haynes, the callipers are held on by guidepins ,and from removal method, it looks as if the y are held on with a nut. The spanners used are shown on same end ,and from photo, it looks as if the nut is on the inside .

BTW- Haynes that if guidepins are removed -- REPLACE with new .

Had a search and found this - http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/231559-octavia-brake-conversion/page__hl__%2Bfabia+%2Brear+%2Bcalliper+%2Bremoval

The caliper is held to the bracket by two round pins, correct. But inside the round pin is a 6mm hex that you have to use to remove them. You might need to get your head right round and look from behind to see it.

Some VAG cars have multisplines instead, but I think all fabias are the hex/Allen key!

If they haven't been taken off for a whole it will be a TOTAL arse. I had to get mine up really high and then use a torque wrench attached to a special 6mm hex bit to get them to shift! I recommend freeing them first with WD etc!

thanks guys for the reply it is a 6mm hex on the inside, can't understand why skoda didn't just use a normal hex nut. cheers!

I have just removed my rear calipers and the inside nut is a pain because you cannot get a normal sized spanner on because it is too narrow.

What you need is a bicycle spanner. The really cheap ones you can get from halfords. Made from cheap flat steel.

It's round, so I doubt any spanner would fit... Unless yours have been changed.

Oh I would not agree with that comment, yes if you are using nasty cheap chuncky spanners, by very do-able if you have quality slim tools.

Right, if its round, then how would it get removed? I think that you should find that it is got a hex shape at the end that gets the bolt screwed into it.

I thought that you had commented earlier that it was hex!

Your previous comments about the bolts fixing the bracket to the hub being hex or spine should be taken onboard though as using a hex bit on a rusty tight spine bolt is normally going to end up with trouble - and that usually means the spine recess becomes a "round" recess.

Ignore me I've posted in the wrong section.

I'm talking about Octavia II

It's a normal bolt head that holds the caliper to the carrier, you need to remove the carrier to change the disc which is held on with allen head bolts which will be tight. Use new bolts if you want when you put it back together but I wouldn't recommend loctite on the threads. I used 40 groove discs and oem pads along with release springs on the rear of mines and 312's on the front.
