Possible New Owner - Few Questions

Featured Replies

Hi

Gonna have a good read of the forum later but here's a few questions.......

I have to swap my car for an automatic as I have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and changing gears is just too painful some days.

With the vat offer on combined with the 0% finance or is it £500 finance contribution - not too sure - they seem a good buy.

So I am looking at a 1.8 petrol Superb/Elegance/Estate - with electric tailgate / front and rear sensors with maxi dot and heated washers and windscreen.

Would there be anything else you recommend as extras?

I don't drive at night (so auto dim mirror not useful) - and the tinted glass I saw at the dealership did not impress me to be honest.

My previous car to the Vauxhall was a Lexus RX450 which I loved but increased insurance premiums (went from £750 fully comp to £2500 overnight - yes I tried every insurer known to man - all same response - its the postcode!! ) made it uneconomical to keep - and it was still worth nearly £40k when I sold it back to Lexus - I got the Insignia because it ticked all the boxes at the time - its a 2.0 petrol SRi with all the gimmicks sat nav/bluetooth etc..........but its not an automatic !!

In the last 12 months I have done approx 5000 miles so a diesel would not help and I seem to remember Diesels do not like short journeys/small miles etc.

Went back to Vauxhall to see what they would give me for it to change it for an automatic and it just does not make economic sense - a new one would be out of the question as the same spec is nearly £28k !

The SUPERB is coming in at around 22 thousand with the extras listed.

So I am looking a a BRAND NEW (10 week build date I have been told) - SUPERB ELEGANCE ESTATE - In the Gun Metal Grey or whatever they call it.

Are there anymore options I should consider - is there anything I can get out of the dealer - do they do a 3 years service deal for this car ?

Also how do those of you with similar models find it is to insure?

Oh just rememberedis the media package radio/cd/sat nav in the SUPERB ELEGANCE any good? Does it have a usb or sd slot anywhere ? All Hands Free and Voice Controlled ??

Thank you for taking the time to read and I hope you can answer some of my questions.

  • In my opinion, a spare wheel is a sensible option to purchase. I dunno, but not sure I'd trust that gunk you put into the tyre!

  • Does anybody know if there is a facelift model due anytime soon ? I asked at Hobin Skoda Manchester and they said that it would definately NOT be next year. Can anybody confirm/deny this? Dave

The Elegance definitely has an SD card slot. No USB I'm afraid, but Yes, it is all hands - free with a lovely voice control.

if you want USB, order the MDI option.

Hi

When I went on the build your skoda site and asked for my finished car to be emailed to me it includes this entry in the interior included features..........

"

Navigation system (MID)

"

So does that mean usb is standard on this model ?

Also is the Columbus Sat/Nav HDD TV unit I have read about on the forum standard on the Elegance?

Dave

No, it has SD card as Standard - the MDI is what you need for USB or iPod control.

Yes, Columbus has HDD (you can copy SD card MP3 songs to it) It plays CD's, MP3 CD's and DVD's, aswell as Navigation and will also give a visual representation of that car's parking sensors.

Heated screen is what's needed if your car lives outside!

Al.

Although the Elegance Columbus doesn't have a TV tuner, that's only on the L&K.

whiteswan,

I've had Fibromyalgia for 18 months and I use a Travelscoot for distances of longer than 100 yards (www.travelscoot.com). I specc'd the variable boot floor as it means the boot floor can be pulled out over the bumper and so the scoot can be lifted in easily without having to worry about scratching the paintwork.

I have the same engine/spec/dsg as you're looking at in steel grey, the only other suggestion is to go for the cost free Luxon wheels, a personal preference but popular choice.

Didn't know about variable boot floor - will look into that one - am I to assume without this there is a "drop" into the boot? What's the cost?

Me and my staff regualrly got cash and carry so would be loading and unloading twice a week.

Hi - yep I included that in the quote - is it just spacesaver that's the option on the Superb?

What are the "luxon" wheels?

Dave

It's classed as a space saver, but in my case, was a full-size 16" (rather than 18") steel wheel with a real tyre on.

Al.

If you are going to order the DSG auto I would recommend hill hold control, and inexpensive extra but very useful feature if you love in an area with hills.

I will say again this should be standard with DSG.

What are the "luxon" wheels?

Dave

They are an 18" alloy wheel. Available as a cost option on the S, SE and as a free option on the Elegance (UK spec).

Some people prefer the look of the Luxon to the other available wheels.

You can see what they look like towards the end of the Superb brochure but also here http://www.amsparts.co.uk/product/Superb_Luxon_Alloy_Wheel_CCX80004

The default alloy on the Elegance is the Thermisto, see http://www.amsparts.co.uk/product/Superb_Themisto_Alloy_Wheel_CCH800001

Hill Hold Control IS standard on the 1.8 DSG.

Went this morning to have a look at a Superb at Hobin Skoda Manchester BURY NEW RD.

To be honest I got a bad impression of this dealer last week when a promised telephone call this week failed to materialise - but decided to give them another go..............wish I had not had bothered - everybody was too busy to attend to me(and not all with customers - it took 2 members of staff to try and figure out the fax/copier at the rear of the showroom - not a hello or how are you from anybody - apart from one member of the team named below.

Stood around like a spare part - took a brochure and left - apparently they have just been taken over by LOOKERS and they are running around like headless chickens - full marks to a sales chap called COLIN who seemed genuinely embarassed about the shambles of the place this morning - he tried to placate me but my £22k or £23k is obviously not wanted at this dealership.

Different story at LISTERS of COVENTRY who telephoned me regarding an internet query I had sent to them last night - within 1 hour I had an idea of what my current car is worth (or not.....(!) and a full breakdown all emailed to me with various different options available to me - something Manchester have not managed in 7 days !

Looks like I will be having a drive to Coventry next Monday or Tuesday to have a test drive and let them have a look at my car..........I bought my LEXUS RX450 from Listers at LINCOLN so I know they are professional - and I am glad to see it extends to other Marques.

Dave

Yeah, interesting comments about the dealers, whom I'd heard were the best in the business. I test drove both an Octavia & Superb at Robert Eardley in Newcastle-Under-Lyme and the salesman couldn't have been less interested. I actually went on to buy a Sytner Select Superb from Toyota World in Birmingham and the salesman (Ted Wright) was brilliant. Since then, I've been into the local Skoda Dealership (Faintree, in Telford) and had a mixed experience: first visit waiting around for ages to speak to someone who couldn't answer my questions; second visit helped by a razor-sharp guy from parts who sorted me out with a locking wheel-nut key.

Personally, I haven't found Skoda dealers to be anything like you would expect from JD Power surveys.

Going a bit off topic regarding dealers. When I wanted to try before buying my Skoda I went to my local dealer. The salesman didn't know as much as I did about the car; thought KESSY was a start/stop thingy in traffic! Then he started talking "Aussie Man Speak" which is every advective/adverb starts with F and ends with K. Made an internet enquiry about a car at a dealer 300Km away and received an e-mail within the hour and a phone call the next day. Bought the car! Then I find the parts "team" at the dealership were useless but the parts team at the local dealer are brilliant. Now I use an ex-Skoda/VW/Audi mechanic to service my car (way cheaper than any dealer and no voiding of warranty) and the local dealer for parts or warranty claims. End result is I am happy and have $$ in my pocket.

Try here...http://www.netcarsho...0-superb_combi/...pics of the variable boot floor start on page 11

I would not have bought my Superb Estate without the Hill Hold and the Park Assist. The latter is likely to be unused other than for demonstration but the front and rear sensors are a must for a car of this size. I would hate to park it without their help.
