Boot light dimming?

Featured Replies

As you all know, that in the boot there is one little bulb that needs to light all the luggage compartment. But "somehow" it doesn't do the job, when you need to get the spare wheel or something else from the lower compartment. I realized that it's good idea to install some LED lightning strips and take the power from the same original light wires.

Then I discovered that the original light dims itself after 1 minute from 12v to 6v and still it's kind of dark. Why is that and is it possible to reprogram it with VAG-COM? In the owners manual there says that it should dim or turn off the light after one hour.

There is a diode in the boot lamp to prevent a sneak feed back to the CCU. If you want to power an additional boot lamp you will have to access the actual lamp terminals inside the existing boot light - not just chop into the wires. Watch the current rating of the CCM switching stages.

The existing boot lamp is a design of true VAG genius. Totally obscured when you most need it - accessing the spare wheel and tools in the dark. Numpties.

Standard bulb is woeful for the cathedral sized boot space.

Install some LED strips or cold cathodes. I've had both and would opt for LED strips. Cold cathode take a while to reach maximum output (about 20 seconds or so) and they're somewhat fragile. LEDs suffer neither of these issues. You can buy the 3m strips for about £10 for 5m, or 2 x 48LED strips for as little as £1 if you're prepared to wait a few weeks for delivery. I have the type pictured below and they're more than adequate. Easy enough to wire in if you wire them straight from the bulb carrier.

I installed LED in the boot using a 12V converter input 4 - 18V and constant 12V output. So no matter what, even when it's suppose to dim down it's still getting 12V. I would take a picture, but i rarely drive when it's dark and the wife has stolen my camera.

As Roto suggested, wire in leds into the existing bulb carrier. Have done similar on my own (see below). Disconnect the original light from it's power feed socket. Insert your led/cathode feeds directly into that. To be fair there's no need to cut into any wires or solder anything. The power feed terminals are similar to a female spade connectors. Just push your new led/cathode wires in that. I know the ccm drops the voltage down after a time, but I can see no difference in light output.
