Car is wobbly and skips over bumps, suspension or bushes?

Featured Replies

My car since ive had it is a soft ride but even over slights bumps or imperfections on the road the sterring wheel is all over the place and almost a bit wobbly. Drive in a straight line and the steering wheel seems to move left to righ with every wee bump or groove. I know this feeling isnt normal, shes on standard suspension. Is this likely to be the shocks done or would it be the steering or suspension bushes have gone?

Cheers

Could be any of the above.

First tho & cheapest check is,

what tyres are on and what pressure are you running those tyres at, when were they checked last?

cheers for the reply George, Now you'll probably laugh but all 4 tyres are a different brand, all decent tyres though with similar grip. I have them at 30 lbs pressure.

I think it just feels loose and bouncey and the steering wheel moves with the road. Any way of checking the rest?

Thanks

tyres are the general suspect, as they follow the contours in the road, could be wishbone bushes, or maybe trackrod ends or steering rack ends.

bouncy = shocks

chattering knock = arb bushes, or track rod ends

heavy knock = ball joints

wandery = inner tie rod ends, wishbone bushes

all these are labeled possible.

With your symptoms i would try this: push down on each corner of car, car should lift back up then settle. Anymore movement and its likely to be shocks.

also give the front of the tyre a boot and see if the wheel freely wobbles back and forth quickly. if it does bushes may be the order of the day

finally hold the front tyres at back and front of tyre and wiggle it both directions as if steering it minutely, if it has play track rod play inner or outer.

Cheers lofty, ill give this a go after work. Hopefully its not a combination of them all but i suppose at 100k miles that sort of stuff is needing refreshed.

I'd get a matching pair of front tyres for starters, not that it is probably the fault but would be a way of getting better steering and even braking performance.

You could put the tyre you take off on the spare or store it for 'later'.

Most likely problem at your mileage is the dreaded 'console bushes' with plenty of info on this site including a really useful photo instruction.

Suggest you get someone to jack it up and wiggle a few things to see what moves that shouldn't!

All the best - you're on the best Fabia forum for info!!

Also to add to the above lists..........loose bolts on the wishbone front pivot, steering rack, or other supesion component!

basically start from the top and work down hehe
