Mpg opinions

Featured Replies

Hi all

I know after doing a search this subject has been done to death a little but I need a little help with my mpg's.

I have a 55 asz engine furby vrs. Its mps on my commute to work have been mind bogglingly good. Doing steady 58mph I have been getting sometimes 75mpg on the trip comp. this was after a unit18 remap only.

I have since had my turbo blow and have replaced it with a hybrid Pd150 turbo and fitted a FMIC.

I then took it to redline in Essex who fitted a unichip piggyback ecu. It was the rolling road set up to 208bhp with 317lbs torque.

The car is lovely and rapid of course and with this I am very happy. Now back to my commute and to 58mph and my mpgs have suddenly dropped to at best maybe 65 mpg on a really good granny run over 65 miles.

The car also seems a tad smokey if I use its torque in low revs in high gear which then clears as the revs grow.

I have disconnected the maf sensor which has only resulted in the poxy engine managment light. Its seemd to lack power so i dont think this is a faulty mag sensor.

So after this little essay any ideas people. Oh i forgot to add sometimes she seems to lack some grunt on the motorway. No limp node though.

i would say its to be expected mate, also the computer may be responding differently with new mapping, only way to really know is neck to neck calculation. The map changes driving styles the computer will read differently.

have you had codes read?

What are the codes matey

Have you scanned the ecu for possible faults?

No. Good point. Will do that this week. I just find it a bit much too loose that much mpg even still granny driving.

save yourself the hassle in a short while, order yourself a clutch now,

i say that as you said you use the torque from low revs in a high gear,

Clutch KILLER!

Drive the car properly and you will get less smoke, dont boot it from low revs, i always make sure im over atleast 2-2500rpm before booting it!

Why did they go down the piggyback ECU route, rather than just mapping it to suit the mods?

I could understand that if it was a CTR or similar where the ECU is locked, but just seems a bit odd.

Aparently thats what they do as a company. Is this a problem in the making?

I never boot it under 2k as im fully aware of the clutch :)and like you have pointed out im going to drive it properly to save the clutch because i honestly dont think that using the torque is saving me any mpgs anyways. Thanks :)

good stuff,

i am also curious about the piggyback ecu, comming from the honda world i know quite a bit about them and it begs the question of why the company didnt just re-map the car, it would probably have saved alot of hassle!

i dont know naything about redline so this might be bull, but are they a competent outfit? do they have and real experience of mapping cars?

They have vast experience in mapping cars. Lots of happy customers have known about them for a while now. Check their website out :)

How does this piggy back ecu work? First i`v heard of it, what advantages does it give over a normal map?

  • Author

I think i can take the chip with me and then just pay for the map for the next car etc which with redline is not a huge expense.

a piggyback ecu is normally used when the ecu on the car has been locked and cant be tampered with for example the honda type-r ep3, theres no real advantage to using it when they could have easily mapped the car again which is why im curious

Piggyback ecu = Tuning box ?.

^^no completely different, tuning box tricks the ecu into thinking that there is colder air comming in, a piggyback ecu is exactly that, a ecu is placed in conjunction with the standard ecu that has been locked
