Poor quality paint on Monte roof?

Featured Replies

Hi, every time I clean my Monte I have noticed scratches on the roof, now they are quite bad , mine has the white body and it just looks as if the roof was originally white and had a thin coat of black so now it has white scratches . Don't know if it is rubbish paint or me cleaning to hard.

Paint is very soft on all vag cars, it may be done to your equipment or technique

Yeah sorry chris the paint is classed as medium to hard ;)

On mine all scratches look white. It is probably the primer or metal showing through if the scratch is deep enough. Even the lighter scratches look almost white, probably it's dust particles or the damaged coat showing like that under the light.

By the way last time I went to a detailer he told me that vag paints are very good in many respects and are "thick" in relation to other manufacturers. I hear people using the term soft paint and I don't get it. Any paint that gets hit by a stone will be chipped and damaged. I think it is down to the shape of the car being prone to hits rather the paint being "soft".

DIZZY3,

Did you get the car brand new or was it a Dealers Demonstrator you bought.

Which ever get & Professional/car sprayer or Bodyshops opinion on your roof & the paint finish,

then, once you have that get the Dealership to look at it and see what they are saying.

If its going to need re-finished with another colour coat & Lacquerd best get it done now under warranty, or at your expense if its not going to be covered under warranty.

Manufacturers use different paints to each other...Nothing unusual there then

BUT

There are 3 hardnesses that are applied by Car makers

Here are a few examples

Soft paint: Most Japanese..ie Honda, Mazda, Subaru, Mitsubishi

Medium : VAG, Ford, Renault, Peugeot

Hard Paint: Mercedes, BMW, Lexus

to everyone involved in this thread

there are not so much differences to how hard or soft a cars paint is! unless your using a sold 2pak which is completely different to paint on modern cars, the only difference is the makeup of the paint i.e water based or solvent based and to be honest that doesn't make a difference to the texture of the paint once it is applied.

as for yourself DIZZY3 like sk4gw was saying you need to have a body shop check it over get a quote( i recommend sp automotive based in tattenhall near chester) and then compare to a dealers and maybe barter to get the price down but without actually seeing the damage i couldn't really tell you what to do.

might sound like I'm going on but i do know what I'm talking about I've worked in bodywork for the past 4 years!

Shanners,

not being cheeky just asking, you work in a Paint Shop, but do you work as a Time Served & trained spray painter?

Because what you are saying there is incorrect.

You are right on texture, but other than that!

i have no idea what Systems or Manufacturers paint and products you use.

I served my Time on Cellulose & even Oxides & Industrial Synthetics, and then on the Early 2 packs & many modern industrial paints and processes..

I dont do Water Based as i do Classic vehicles, but spent 2 months doing a revision course to be up on it.

george

What's your washing technique?

Are you rinsing before washing? snow foam? Two buckets? Surely not a sponge?

sk4gw i have been trained but mainly with water based and just picked up a few things with solvents from the boss as I've gone along, I'm just speaking from what i know and have been taught, it sounds like you have quite bait of experience and maybe i am wrong, but i am just speaking from what i know

I feel it's not how soft the paint is but how thin the coat is that seems to make a difference to how prone to chipping it is. My focus ST was shocking for stone chips but the furby seems fine

It will be interesting to hear Dizzy3's Washing and polishing procedures.

Lots of Claying getting done these days on Paint Finishes tht can only take that for so long.

I know its supposed to be non abrasive etc etc.

T Cut was a curse for years but the paint could take it, then Colour match & similar,

Lots of Standard Water Based Finishes from lots of Manufacturers are not going to stand up to some peoples ideas of Detailing.

Different Days from a possible Wax twice a year

& build up Protection from the elements and still have a perfect shine with a wash and Chamios over now and again.

When using a roofrack on our Monte it's not uncommon for it to leave imprints of the roofrack feet in the paint on the roof, these fade over a few days leaving no trace.

I've put it down to the paint being soft.

As said ....Skodas dont have soft paint

Thanks all for replies,my car was bought new it is twelve months old, I take my car to a local hand wash car cleaners , they are very good , never had probs with my previous car ( black Renault Clio ) or my partners black Leon , will let dealer have a look ,but don't hold out any hope.

Black Magic Pearlescent is not soft !! Its one of the hardest out there I machine polish a lot of cars and BMP gives more trouble than anything , never found Race Blue on the Octavia soft either

As said ....Skodas dont have soft paint

I'll let you have a look at the marks left in our roof by the roofrack at tomorrows meet....

I dont doubt you.........but its a fact that Skoda/VAG paint is not classed as soft

Ive tried removing a small scratch today with my machine polisher from the side of the Octavia. I used an aggressive mf cutting pad and Schol 17+ Polish...It hardly touched it!!

As said ....Skodas dont have soft paint

They do. Speaking from experience and now on the 2nd warranty spray of my front bumper due to soft paint......which has come back SOFT!

Sorry youre wrong.

I have re-finished recently on Skodas, Red, & White.

Note they are not Metallics.

Also, Polished 2 Black roofs with good quality & finish of Paint.

Thankfully the Standard factory non metallic finish is of the type that a stone chip can be touched in and polished out with the correct colour on a pin and touched into the chip.

I Have polished several & various Metallic Skodas and other VAG vehicles over several years.

The Paint Finishes are nearly all excellent & pretty robust.

As to Soft & Hard, its not terms or descriptions i recognise or use from Spraying, Respraying & touching up cars for many years.

Well not in Passenger Vehicle finishes. & Other than from Customers etc.

Now the Finish & refinishing of Plastic parts and things like Bumpers & Spoliers is different again since they are seldom being Baked and getting different Preperation, Primers,

& very seldom is any painter or Re-Finisher following or using the same Factory Paint, undercoats or Spraying to the same specifications. (or importantly Thickness)

I certainly did not spray the Red Fabia or the White Fabia with Water Base Paints, & i did final coat & lacquer.

For that greater amount of toughness and a more 'Durable' finish.

Nice to get years of Polishing in without rubbing away the top coat.

Now Durable is a term that we often use!!

Sorry youre wrong.

So me, the bodyshop and Skoda warranty are wrong? I have reports stating warranty rectification for SOFT paint to front bumper.

The bodyshop have also now gone to the paint supplier regarding the soft paint issues i am experiencing.

Soft paint only seems to affect the solid colours on Skoda and is well documented on here.

Whats wrong with your paint then.

Why is the not very technical term 'Soft' being used,

what is happening is it chipping easily?

Surprised they are not terming that as 'Brittle' if thats the problem, or is it Peeling ?

?Is the Body Shop using, Paint Supplied by Skoda & applying to Skoda Specifications.?

What about the Prepartion, is it Primed and Undercoated with the product supplied by Skoda?

Perhaps..for solid colours...but even that statement contradicts the Professional Detailers' experience of Skoda paint

So...I stand by what I have said

SORRY
