Rear Knocking over bumps - 2006 VRS Estate

Featured Replies

Morning all,

I have a feeling it's probably the rear bushes but my 2006 VRS (Petrol) Estate is making a few knocking noises as the wheel unloads going over a speed bump... There's no knock as the wheel goes up but as it comes back down there's a definite knock there, not too loud but I guess it's probably the bushes.

It's only done 48k so surprised they've worn but I did notice it has got worse since taking it to Silverstone (Camping) fully loaded up on rough ground so I hope it's not something to do with that.

Just wanting to see if anyone else has changed theirs, and how much (roughly) it would cost? Is it likely to just be the lower arm bushes or are others prone to wearing?

sounds like the shock top nut might be loose, try tightening all bolts up

Rear tie rods ends seem to be a common and premature failure on the vRS

ah 4x4 will be more complicated

The vRS is two wheel drive...

i obviously dont know the mk2 very well cos tie rod ends on the rear of a two wheel drive has baffled me, im gonna put my head in a website and do some more learning

It will be the droplinks that are perished Old and new together, look at how much thicker the revised oem one is, I replaced mine when it was lowered and koni fsds fitted new bushes and alignment, the knocking was coming from the droplinks, ( stethoscope

Thanks for this!!!

I've had a good look up under the car on a ramp, and can't see anything obvious or find anything that seems to be knocking but these look a worthwhile replacement anyway!

Best bet to get them from a main dealer or is there anywhere online you know sells them??

Thanks though!

I have also got a bad feeling my alignment is all out (despite being all done in April) - All 4 tyres have worn the inner edges pretty badly, checking the camber they are within the tolerance specified by Skoda but the Rears in particular look like they're running too much to me.... I may get them adjusted to 1 deg as the recommended is 1.45 degree with +30 either way, they're running around 1.6 but definitely wearing the insides... Maybe the actual tracking is out??

I'll get the droplinks though if you can advise where, then I think I may have to invest in some new dampers all round as although on lowered springs it's not a fantastic ride.... Then it's 4 new tyres, full alignment done and hopefully new drop links to take away the knocking noise.

Thanks again

ABC got me them around £30- to £35 from TPS , these guys http://www.trustgroupuk.com/contact-us.aspx ( Briskoda sponsors do10% off if you tell them you are on here ) they got me the Polly bushes . They used a stethoscope to hear for knocks, ( 3 guys sat in rear and one sat on the lip bouncing and Peter underneath with a Stethoscope . I had it lowered first, normal dampers it was like Tigger down the road. Then when I fitted Koni FSD it is sublime. It needs Lazer alignment, the settings can be within Skodas tolerances , but can be pointing in each direction! hope that helps

No point in me making another post.

I too are gettin more a rattle i would say than a knock, i've been under the car but couldnt see anything obvious (aside from a knackered bump stop) spoke to my mechanic he says the bump stop is fine for now infact i could cut it out and never have one but it shouldnt be causing a rattle and he seems to think maybe its droplinks at the rear.

To me it sounds like a loose caliper but i've checked that and all bolts seem to be tight but thats the noise i can describe.

Glad it's not just me...

I've had it up at an MOT centre and they can't find any knocking from any bushes, droplinks, hubs, bearings etc...

The noise is only as the Damper is effectively at maximum length so almost as if you imagine it uncompressing and hitting its maximum travel - That's when it seems to me that it makes the noise. It does it on either side of the car - If you go over a speed bump (One of those raised in the middle of the road) with either side you hear it on whichever side you ride over the bump with....

I can't really see what else it can be so may just put a new pair of rear dampers on to see if that sorts it.

Well mine turned out to be a stone off the drive stuck in the rear control arm!!! Embarassing to say the least lol

Just goes to show, it is sometimes the simple answer!

I remember 4 of us getting out of a Mini Metro in the middle of Wales one day in rather a hurry as we thought the car had caught fire. Smoke was pouring through the air vents - turned out it was a stone caught between the caliper/pad and disc at the front that was causing it!

Talk about embarrassing!
