Whine after cambelt, AUX belt and water pump change

Featured Replies

Yet another post about problems with my car :/

Hope someone may know whats causing this.

At 116k I had my cambelt, tensioners, aux belt and water pump changed by an independant garage thats well rated by friends of mine.

When I picked the car up, there was a whine sound, that increased with RPM. (Not the turbo) It kinda sounds like my old rover 200!

I know that usually, a whine usually means a tight belt, but the mechanic said its because the belt is new. He said to give it a week, and he will re-check if the noise is still there.

He mentioned about using an alan (or hex) key, which moves (i think the tensioner) round to a point, which can't be wrong.

Now 3-4 weeks later, and 117,600 miles, the whine is still there. So obviously its nothing that needs to settle. Car pulls as it did before the change.

Hopefully shall be getting him to check it next monday 6th.

Anyone had this problem, or know if it could be the tension of the belt?

Car is a 2006 "55" fabia vrs - BLT

Only mod is mufflerectomy.

Last service was 108k

Thanks Guys.

Check the belt yourself for any sign of premature wear for a start. Quite often one of the securing bolts for the cover get dropped down into the lower cover, and rub on the belt itself! Other than that, it could be an over tightened belt as you mentioned (which is probably the most likely). You can also do a bit of a check by using your thumb and fore finger, you should be able to twist it 90 degrees without too much effort. Other than that it could be pas or auxiliary belts being too tight, or duff bearings in your tensioner or waterpump which isnt unknown from new. If it didnt happen before it was all changed then alternator bearing is probably not at fault, although keep it in your peripheral thinking if you run out of ideas as stranger things have happened! Hope you get it sorted mate

don't worry about it as he is going to be fixing the problem (hopefully for free) sounds sort of like a over tightened belt i have also heard of a new belt on old pulleys causing a noise but have never come across it myself (that's just me does not mean its not possible could also mean ive been told a load of rubbish haha)

but bottom line don't worry too much about it as it should be fixed for you :)
