Hard leather seat causing right buttock pain

I've read this thread, and find many people describing their own experiences, but few offering a proven solution that will work for you.

I would therefore like to help you in a practical way. If you were to visit Prestwick ( a lovely coastal town in South Ayrshire), I will happily remove the seats from my 10 month old Superb 'S', and swap them for your leather interior.

That way, I get the leather I have craved, and you get the comfort that you seek....................

Absolutely, Martin. It's extra work but I would want the OP to be happy......... Now I hope he had wood trim - always thought it goes well with leather....

Sorry no wood trim - and a bit far to travel

Sounds like a right pain in the ass.

Seriously I have surgery on my spine last year and find the seats to be quite good if a little firm. I like a seat that stops you moving/sliding about. Sports seat are always the best option but the Superb seat do a good job and I like the alcantara sections in the middle.

I've been having problems recently, so took myself and the chariot to my physiotherapist. Mine is an Elegance with the seat controls alongside the seat squab. After sorting out the best back friendly driving position for me, she looked at the issue of right hip pain. In her opinion, the seats are too narrow for anyone with above average width over the greater trochanters (Google that) with skinny buttocks (poor glutea maximus), like me. This means that the seat's right side wing, held firmly as it is by the plastic panel and underlaying metal bar, will press on the bursa protecting the greater trochanter, causing inflammation and pain. This in turn can affect the ileo-tibeal band, resulting in transmitted pain on the outside of the knee just above and below it. The answer for me is a firm seat pad shaped to fit the seat that raises my bum enough to get the trochanters above the seat wings.

It cost me £13 made-to-measure at an auto upholsterers, and works!

i find my S spec cloth seats very comfortable and done a 200 mile drive in them no probs, mind you the seat hasn't got lumbar adjustment but i like the standard setup anyhow, but my brother has a 12 plate s spec 1.6 tdi superb too, and he had to put a cushion on the seat as it wasn't holding him right, he got heavily padded seat covers and that done the trick for him

I've had surgery on my lower back and sciatica for 10 years. I have a SE trim with the vinyl and fake alcantara seats. I'm a taxi drive so use it more than most and good for me if a little firm.

6'2' and over 15st. I was worried about all the seat stuff when I bought my L&K. No problems so far, done a few 200+ mile trips. I always put the front of the seat higher than the rear. I've put spacers under the front in some cars in the past - the only way I could get an Alfa seat right.

Just spend time setting your seat up properly. When I did my IAM training setting the seat was seen as essential, I was really surprised my plod son was trained by the police to drive pandas & vans but doesn't know how to set up his seat.

On a serious note, my wallet is very thin:-(, but in the back pocket of certain trousers it plays he'll with me, not so in others -so at times I ( dangerously) hand it over to SWMBO!!

Any chance of posting a picture of the seat pad you had made as I'd be interested in giving it a go.

What company did you use to get it made?

Maybe we could do a group buy

Seat pad will be with me on 28 July. Currently in the 'testing' phase so wrapped in stockinet - if happy over a longer term I'll get it leather covered to match the seats.

I'd second that view even though it might render the heated seat useless!

I am still happy with my modification of bending the underlying metal bar away from the seat and so creating a gap between the right side seat cushion and the plastic trim. For me it cured the problem completely by allowing the cushion to spread on that side. .

I too have bent the metal seat bar away from my right thigh....works for me.

Is it hard to get the cover off the electric seat controls?

Can you post a picture of the final result so I can get an idea how much you bent the bar?

You can just unclip the top of the plastic trim from the bar without removing the whole panel. The get a large lever (i used a breaker bar) and put it between the bar and the seat frame, then bend the seat bar outwards towards the door.

The gap on mine -with the trim re-attached- is about 10mm.

Sorry, can't post photos as i am at work and not home for another week.

I followed the instructions and the plasic is easy enough to clip off to expose the bar. But before I bent it I sat on the seat and to be honest the bar is not pressing against the seat so there seems littlt point bending it even more as it still won't touch the seat. Maybe the thing that holds the bar (lower in the seat and towards the back of the seat) is what actually make the difference?

JamCart , it's the plastic cover that presses against the seat. When the bar is bent, and then the plastic put back, there should be a gap between the side ofcthe cover and the side of the cushion. This will allow the cushion to give a little more when a bum is sitting on it!

jinxgj I am pleased that someone else found that this worked for them. Yes the bar isn't touching the seat, but the hard plastic side trim that is mounted on the bar does push against it. By moving it away a bit and making a gap of about 10mm between the plastic and the seat then the cushion can spread properly as we both found.

Hi,

I've just taken delivery of an Octavia Estate, and have started geting this pain in the right buttock. Would be grateful if Mayor of Newark could give details of where to get cushion made.

Cheers

As an experiment, I've managed to unclip all of the plastic trim so that it's not in contact with the seat cushion...

But I have to say it doesn't feel much better. Maybe bending the bar is the only way to go but I'd be surprised as the bar isn't touching the seat cushion?

Perhaps other with the same problem could also try unclipping the plastic trim (it unclips without too much trouble) and report back if it makes much difference?

This may be a stupid question, but are you testing whether the bar touches the seat with you sat in it or not? When not sat in the seat it doesn't touch it.

When you are sat on the seat(in my case anyway) the side bolsters spread out to touch the bar so you end up with your right buttock/thigh area sitting on the bar causing the discomfort.

Just a thought.....

There is still a gap of a few mm when I sit on the seat - but maybe bending the bar is the trick?

I have quite a small waist (34") & not too heavy (12 stone) so I don't really push the cushion out too far.

The pain is actually worse in the area BETWEEN the two circled area in the image above - this was explained in detailed medical explanation in one of the previous posts. If I just push the cushion out with my fingers at that location then I can feel an improvement. Perhaps I'm just a funny shape!

The raised cushion might also be the way to go?

I did notice that seat comfort on the L&K pack Superb was noticeably better than on the standard Elegance and my experience since buying the car has been that these are the most comfortable seats I have ever sat in. On a long trip with three passengers, they also were supremely comfortable despite almost 8 hours in the car. It did take me some time to find the most comfortable seat position but it was well worth it.

Will take a 3.6 L&K for a test drive as seat comfort biggest purchase concern. Is it true different seat to Elegance? Would be the ventilated seats.
