Buying a mk1 vrs octavia from a garage/dealer

Featured Replies

Morning guys,

At the moment i'm looking to buy a mk1 vrs to replace my mk4 golf gt tdi.

At the moment i've found a 2005 silver one on 80k for £3.5k, which seems expensive for me (reduced from 4.5k!) has fsh and is pretty mint.

Also found a 2004 red one on 100k with fsh for £2500.

I know these will be more than a private sale but i cant find any decent private ones local atm and want a car i can trust and a warranty of some kind!

What is the "best" colour for a vrs? i like red or black personally but think the silver could look mint with dark black body mouldings and maybe a black roof.

I bought mine and, despite a huge amount going wrong, got told the 'warrant' didn't cover it. Even if it did, no courtesy car available.

Make sure it's a good, reputable dealer...

Dealers offer comical prices for trade-ins now which may be why you're finding so few for sale in garages. They'll all be going in private sales. Saw another post recently that said there were loads of VRSs on Ebay.

I'd buy from a trusted private seller if you can - it's usually worth being patient.

Look on the for sale section m8, a forum car would be better looked after etc

Sent from my Galaxy S2 not a Crapple!

^ +1. It would be an advantage for you to source from the forum if you can. Personally I like the vRS in the lovely metallic blue or the vibrant green (sorry can't be more tech colour ID'ing wise). Anyway good luck with the search

Imho, nowhere is trustworthy when it comes to buying cars and the only real thing going for a trade sale is that you have the Sale of Goods Act on your side if something major goes wrong with the car that the trader could reasonably have been expected to know about. The majority of warranties that are supplied with these cars aren't worth the paper they're printed on and there are so many exclusions that you might as well pay less for the car and arrange a WarrantyDirect or similar warranty yourself. Unfortunately I don't think you'll find many companies who will provide the sort of peace-of-mind cover for cars with 100+k miles on and even the manufacturers offering long warranties seem to draw the line at 100k miles.

Best bet is to go with your instinct, do your homework on a few basic checks, especially common problems, and buy on condition. Also remember that it's not uncommon for people to offload cars to traders when big bills are imminent, either routine like cambelt service, clutch, or more serious like poor cold running, notchy gearbox, etc so make sure you check the service history and give it a good drive from cold.

Good luck! Plenty of choice out there if you shop around or are willing to travel a bit :)

+ 1 re: warranties. I suspect most people take them at face value not fully realising that many are littered with caveats and exclusions. I second much of what ScoobyChris details and keep a close eye on the forum as there appears to be some nice vRS's appearing.

He'll need good luck if he's trying to find an Octavia vRS mk1 in those colours... :giggle:

The MKiv golf Gti Turbo I bought did less than 50 miles before the temp went off the scale and it needed a new water pump and cam belt.

It had only been done 50,000 miles before!!

It cost me a couple of hundred quid to sort.

The point is, if you buy second hand don't trust anyone and keep in mind it may cost you straight away!

Keep a slush fund to one side to get these jobs done.

My Golf cost me £1300 then I've spent another £850 to get it right but..... I now know that now its in tip top condition mechanically.

Ooops, yes I suppose they relate to the newer vRS's :o

I recently traded my 04 octy vrs in black in for a newer one. Great car and well looked after some minor body scratches and peeling spoiler but all in all a good car- just over 100k on it and got the grand total of 1600 sheets for it , saying I was gutted was an understatement!!! First offer was 1400, tad bit shocked!! Saw it recently on eBay and autotrader for 2695 oh and with under 100k on it so be very careful indeed!

Regarding those mileages you've quoted, I hope you've informed the seller of the discrepancy, and possibly E Bay too?

Too many of these clocking parasites praying on potential purchasers now.

Quick VAG diagnostics will soon drag up the true mileage.

Contacted the seller who would never Answer my call or reply to txts, car sold shortly after. Would be interested to hear if anyone on here bought WV04 and what mileage it is showing. Someone did mention that it may be on as under 100k so it shows up in the relevant search but still on its true reading but who knows?
