Why alway's the re-map?

Featured Replies

Hi all, not meaning to cause friction on the forum but i'm the proud owner of a completely standard Fabia 1 vrs and

i just can't get why everybody seems to remap the cars engine?

I was in the motor trade for a good few years and still work on many group A/group N rally cars but i just don't get the need to re-map

the engine's on these cars as they simply fly as standard?

Also not meaning to rant on but i'm the same about lowering, i can get my car to bottom out on most country roads without

it being lowered (i like my sump)...

don't get all meany with your answers, it's just curiousity?

I'm guessing you have some other underlying issue then. Iv driven 3 mapped fabia's & a mapped pd130 passat, non felt like what your describing. Maybe you have a boost leak or something, but it's w

Lower ...... better....faster..... that is all !

Not too fussed on altering the suspension side of things myself, but I have remapped the last 3 cars I have owned and cant see why anyone would'nt do it?

Baisicly, you're gonna get a faster, more tourquey and drivable car, with increased MPG.

Who doesn't want that?

Why do you decorate a house, it keeps you dry as standard. Personalisation! Why put in a combi boiler. hot water and radiators faster amd uses less gas to do it. We all want nice living spaces, efficient heating, stylish decor, regardless of how functional it is in the first place. Why should our cars be any different?

get more economy with a remap, more bhp and more torque. . its a winner all round.

as to lowering, mines nearly touching the floor under the sump, but i love how lowered cars look :-D

but obviously lowering it,makes it stiffer so corners better and won't bottom out as easy compared with standard springs (unless you run it ultra low)

Standard acceleration from 40-80mph in ~17-18 seconds, mapped in ~9 seconds.

I think since the fabia never was designed to handle grreat putting, coilovers help sort out a lot of that and make it more nimble round the bends. obviously never as good as xyz but in terms of percentage increase i think it will be fairly substantial.

Massive bang for buck. Extra 40bhp for £250? Yes please!

Mainly people want the balance between the power and economy for better drive ability

In general (not really the fabia) but people use the extra power for towing caravans etc

Thanks

Lake district = interesting roads and a range of challenging surfaces - SE England boy racer = Milton Keynes and smoothly tarmac'd roundabouts. Taking the P a bit wwith the second part but YSWIM...

Mine = remapped because I wanted the extra poke and as OEM it seemed to have a dip in the middle of the rev range.

Lowered because the Eibach springs do a far better impersonation of a taut handling hatch than the limp noodles fitted as standard.... Though I have to admit to bias as I'd been driving my Impreza P1 constandtly for the previous 4 months... Though the real comparison was with my old AX GT that was no where near as fast but far more fun to drive at 7/10ths. :)

Does nobody else with a remap hate waiting for it to come on boost? I find that from slowish speed where before I could plant my door at 2k in second gear, now I plant my foot and nothing happens for a few seconds until about 2,300 revs where the turbo kicks in and I disappear. But for that quick burst of acceleration I've had to wait for the lag to go. A solution is changing down to first but then you run out of puff very quickly :/ anybody else dislike this about their map?

I found that in my remapped focus. If I used to roll up to a junction in second 1 see there was a gap so pull out then LAG. Quite dangerous!

Just sounds like a poor map if I'm honest. Never had such an issue at any point with my fabia or any of my mates (nearly all unit 18 mapped). Plenty of power low down. That's the whole point of a map, move the power to more useable places in the rev range.

I'm new to car modding, never really done anything more than put different tyres on and then only when the old ones were worn out. Now with the new car I would probably have left it as stock but for the amount of info on this forum about it and been more than happy with it.

What I do enjoy is driving a nice bit of road well, holding speed through corners and being able to make quick and safe overtakes. I have now had mine remapped by APR and okay it has raised to top end power and torque which has made the car smother and more responsive. Handling has been sorted a bit with a RARB but I will most likely end up with the Skoda supplied Eibachs, can only think they didn't fit them as stock so as to getpeople to buy them as an extra!

Having done these changes I suppose I have caught the bug and am now interested in what people are doing but still at the stage where my head overules my heart. I think as people have said, it is a personal thing. Cars come in all shapes and sizes and I have heard there are actually people who prefer non Skoda cars, go figure! Maybe you can't find the car of your dreams within your budget, but perhaps you can make a compromise on something cheaper and uprate it to more what you want.

My next car will be a S3, 265bhp as standard. 0-60 in under 6 seconds.

You KNOW it will be off to Shark for a visit after I've had it a few months.

300bhp can be fairly easily achieved with just a basic stage 1 map on the S3.

Torque should rise to about the same as my Fabia (300 lb/ft)

That will do for starters. ;)

You make me sick!! Haha!

Keep your gears in the correct rev range then ;) . I never plant my foot till 2.5k+, no lag, no wheel spin, no clutch slip and all smiles.

I'm perfectly aware of the correct rev range but i dont like changing down to 1st to pull away at junctions that Ive just rolled up to. It's not a bad map, I went to shark and I'm really pleased with it everywhere else in the rev range. But it's DEFINATELY laggy until 2300-2400. And as much difference as its made higher up the revs, it's made it miles less useable from a slow speed. I disagree that it has more power low down. Low down is idle-2500ish revs right? I have barely anything in that band. Mid range is where I really start to shift.

How common are clutch / dmf / turbo issues on mapped VRSs?

That depends on mileage, map, the way it is driven etc. but with a stage one map that is nice and smooth on the torque, all of the standard items should be okay but their life may be shortened slightly.

What about the issue of increased insurance premium for the remap and/or lowering?

I guess you'd need to drive quite a few miles every year to recoup that cost with the increased MPG.

What figures have people worked out on these issues?

Mapping a car isn't just about more power, as I said in a earlier post, it's about moving power about, getting a nice smooth spread across the rev range. What use is it if half the rev range has no power at all?!

How common are clutch / dmf / turbo issues on mapped VRSs?

As said, all down to how it's driven, plenty do 150,000 + on a mapped car before any of these go.

Unless your doing mega miles I doubt you'll ever recoup the money. It's all about the drive for me,

110k miles running 173bhp before my standard original turbo went pop. Changed the standard original clutch at the same time
