Advice on 4x4 estate

Featured Replies

Hey guys im looking for some advice on a 1.8T mk1 octy 4x4 estate think they are all elegance models. My first child is due on 25th DEC ( I know what a crap day lol) and im wanting a car that is perfect for a family but also a bit sporty and i think the octy estate ticks all the boxes as it will also be quite cheap on insurance compared to a VRS. Does anyone have any advice what to look out for on the 4x4 or advise me that this is a good car thanks in advance

all I have to say is good luck finding one that doesn't have mega miles

the only other estate thing to watch for is rust on the tailgate, most other common problems can be easily researched

what is the max mileage i should be looking for what are the engines like with over a 100K on them ??

I bought my vRS with 100k+ on the clock and its never missed a beat, you just need to make sure its been serviced regularly and look through the history for cam belt changes etc.

Mines on 139k without any problems

My 4x4 estate is at 121000 and is tip top, but has FSH. had the usual.boost leaks but they are common to ALL 1.8 turbos, check tyres as they wear quite equally if.worn could.be. £200-250 , check back box as I got quoted £750 as aparently they are different to.all other octys and vag cars and the shape.of.them means they trap water and rot. I replaced with a custom made stainless steel for £160 with lifetime garauntee and quality made too. I think they make an excellent.family car especially like me I didn't want caught in the snow or ice of last winter with my young family, one of whom is disabled. Tax is.slightly dear too but.no more than.similar.powered.petrol cars. Mines for sale tho ;) but.only as I want to start offroading and.want a disco or such like and can't afford three cars, other wise I'd be keeping it. Don't let mileage put.you.off if the car , any car has been serviced and.looked after properly.

Oh and.as. said.tailgait rust. I managed to get.mine done.on warranty though so check. They have a ten year antiperforation/ rust warranty Skoda.should warrant a claim.if still in time scale as did mine with 2 weeks to.go.

Mine's on 121k (Jan 2002).

No rust issues on tailgate but a few traces on a couple of wheel arches, as expected from stone chips.

It runs well now. When I bought it, every now and again teh engine struggled for power when the car or temp was cold and a warning light would come on. Skoda couldn't fix it (2 visits!) but with the help of this forum and some carb cleaner I fixed it for a few quid (dirty throttle body) and an hours work.

Today it's having new front pads, engine oil, gearbox oil and haldex oil change and it should be fine for another few years' use.

Probably selling it in a few months as it's a 3rd car and is seldom used. DM me if you may be interested.

DM you? Danger mouse you? lol

I thought I would bump this up, rather than starting a new topic.

I'm looking at a 4x4 estate myself for some winter motoring. I have my eye on an 01 model with 120k advertised for £1k.

How reliable is the 4WD system in these? What maintenance is required for it, and at what intervals?

How often should the timing belt be done on the 1.8T?

All in all are they fairly reliable cars?

good cars and the haldex system is bullet proof !!

i have a fully modded stage 2 at the moment that ocst me 3 k but has every modification going making it a true weapon but still an amazing family car ;)

I have rust coming through on sills and arch. Mine is 53reg. How easy was it to get yours repaired under warranty?

The car appears to be a genuine one from the ad, with great history etc. I emailed the seller there to confirm it was driving 100% and the only thing he said was there was a slight rattle from the exhaust beat shield.

I'd always be a bit dubious about something like that and why the owner wouldn't take the time to fix something as simple prior to selling. Would there be scope for anything more serious that could be causing the rattle in the same area? Or am I being paranoid?!

just look underneath, chances are you should be able to see where the rattle is coming from
