1.9 TDi Estate Buying Guide

Featured Replies

Hello everyone.

Is there a good buying guide on this site for an Octavia Estate 1.9 TDi?

Has anyone got a check list of points to check to make sure I am not looking at a lemon.

Thanks in advance :)

Check rust on the rear tailgate.

Engines are usually bulletproof but check for blue smoke (turbo on way out) and the sticky vanes problem (90/110bhp..?).

Rust on rear wheelarch may be starting to show through.

Check glow plug light goes out quickly- if not, coolant temp sensor is buggered. Cheap fix but you can use it as a haggling point for a less tooled-up seller.

Exhaust hanger at back rusts through very easily and is an MOT fail...

Tailgate lock and numberplate lights can have issues due to water seemingly getting everywhere on the tailgate. Something to do with the aerodynamics. Irritating.

If the doorlight doesn't come on when certain doors are opened, you need to replace the miniswitches in the locks. It's a nightmare.

Hope this helps... I really enjoy owning mine, despite the niggles. Very economical, excellent spec (Laurin & Klement) and extremely comfortable.

Its a 130 bhp model if that helps. (Elegance)

they only do 45.7 mpg if youve bought a pup. :rofl:

good motors mate just look for usual things on any car.

That's down to driver differences. :giggle:

The 130bhp engine is nice. The gearbox can get a bit weak, many people recommend changing the oil around 100k. I had a solid flywheel conversion put in as the DMF was fubar'd. Cost a bit, but was worth it. Just throwing that out there.

my solid flywheel conversion cost me £30, took me 4 hours too. why was yours so expensive????? :rock:

Because I didn't use superglue just to glue the dual mass together and I got a garage to do it. Sorry. :D

i hope they used the proper 90 nm torque and 1/4 turn on your stretch bolts. And 20 nm torque on the pressure plate........ sorry i mean:

the round bits go turny turny tight, no fall off :rofl:

Is there anyway to tell if it actually is a 130 engine? Any give aways?

Also looking at a hatchback now as the estate I liked sold :(

70 = SDI

90 = TDI

110 = TDI

130 = TDI

Although someone could have changed the badges. Best bet is to check the sticky label it in the boot which lists the options, and engine code (3 letters).

SDI (70) = AGP/AQM

TDI (90) = AGR/ALH

TDI (100PD) = ATD/AXR

TDI (110) = AHF/ASV

TDI (130PD) = ASZ

I have listed the 100PD, but I am not sure if that appeared in many Octys - if so it must have been the end of the production run, and I am not sure on the badge colouring for that either.

Cheers for your help.

Just done a car check and it came up as 129bhp. Will check badges and codes though just to be sure haha

Do all 130s come with a 6 speed?

Yes, no 5-speed option on a 130.

Still the same ratios overall as the 5-speed I think. When I'm doing 70mph, the engine is turning about 2,000rpm...

Just so you know, I think that the estate is almost unnecessarily large! It is socking massive in the back, a hatch may suit your needs better. Still a belter of a boot on them. I got the estate because I do shift a lot around and I prefer the looks.

Happy hunting!
