VRS DSG 'S' position

Featured Replies

Dsg will change from 5th to 6th between 100-120mph in S. Really wouldnt suggest testing this out on normal public roads though

sounds like thisweekends homework is to play with my paddles :)

This thread is an educash ejuka - I've learnt a lot. Seriously, I've had the car nine months and only getting into the paddles now :bandit: . I had a 'why have a dog and bark yourself' attitude until now.

I ment changing to often at low speeds up to 15mph ie in a traffic jam. And I get some of that gearbox clunking noise at low speeds and that prevents it I've found :) I've only used S mode upto 80 dealer told me it would only go to 5th in S mode

Sk4gw - yea D is very good I tend to use it all the time if I want to **** over a boy racer I use manual

I use manual always, either the stick or paddles it suits my driving more, i find d holds gears too long sometimes for my liking and changes down at the earlyest chance where in manual it would only change down if it really has to

But does leaving it in D give the best economy? I am assuming so. Off to the shops in a mo and gonna try and paddle all the way :)

I wouldnt say all the times because it only changes once hitting 2000 rpm most the time where as with paddles to can get it into 7th and 40ish mph (rembering off the top of my head) sure if im wrong someone will correct me

Whilst we're on the topic.of gearboxes can I ask what's the procedure when you stop at traffic lights for example.

Do you leave it in D and keep your foot on the footbrake with the handbrake on; keep it in D with handbrake on and release the footbrake so you don't dazzle the driver behind but with the car trying to move; or should you bung it in N with the handbrake on?

I'm not talking about the quick stops but rather those times when you arrive as the lights change and there are filters etc that mean you are stuck for ages.

Come to a stop, whilst foot on brake place in netural and then handbrake then let off brakes. prob best then to move off is brake, select d/m, release handbrake then brakes, just what i would do

Re. Brake Lights.

In another DSG thread or 3 in the forum 'General Chat' & 1 or 2 threads this year about Hll Hold Assist etc,

People seem to think its OK to sit with the foot on a foot brake for ages.

I believe in following the Highway Code.

& i ride motor bikes, push bikes and high or low seating vehicles & dislike seriously people in front that dont care about anyone else.

Also,

if i have been roasting a car, i dont like to come to a stop and hold brake pads against hot discs.

Not much of a problem on a vRS, but it can result in warped discs.

No keen on going to 'Park', with the DSG, but sometimes i do.

I dont like to dazzle those behind, thats for sure.

Thats what I do too, no point holding on the brake

Had another good blast in manual tonight - this is the place to pick up tips - George is right, the manual and salesmen are worse than useless.

A few months back I was approaching a mini roundabout, going straight through, a police car was coming the other way, it didn't indicate so assumed it was also going straight on. I then realised it was going right, so I stopped, with half the car on the roundabout - she waved me on but when I pressed the accelerator I was going nowhere - I had no idea what was wrong and there were several embarrassing seconds with me sitting there - eventually I realized I'd somehow knocked it into manual (I'd never used manual at that point). Amazingly, I wasn't pulled in for a 'have you had anything to drink, sir?' chat  .

Do you mean neutral?? Coz still should have gone somewhere

Er, good point, you must be right. Even more embarrassing than being stranded on a mini roundabout in front of a police car.

Thanks for that, it puts my mind at rest.

Not sure this is correct; according to the vehicle manual, in S it only uses 1st-5th, as top speed is reached in 5th only.

It depends. If I know the lights aren't on red for long I stay on the brake otherwise I stick it in park and handbrake on. I'm not that bothered about others sitting on the brakes. It's never dazzled or irritated me as some have said.

D with combo of paddles is best option for me. S is okay but as others have said it holds the revs to high and often holds a gear too long.

However all good and the DSG is a great piece of kit.

Mine will go into S6 quite readily at normal motorway cruising speeds. Won't go into 7th tho.

Thanks for that info; so much for the manual.

I bet the mpg is interesting if you use S6 for a long motorway journey.
