Strange tyre wear - any ideas?

Hi all

Just had to replace this tyre do to the groove on the inside shoulder. The tyre was on the N/S front corner.

The groove does not go all the way round the tyre, but the shoulder is worn to some extent all the way round worse in one area than the rest. Its taken about 10k from new for this to happen.

Tyres on that corner have worn strangely before but not like this. Any ideas would be welcome.

You won't average distance on tyres is about 16k

It is absolutely a waste of time and money geting the steering geometry checked until you are certain that all the ball joints and bushes are in good order, including the rear axle.

If he goes to someone decent like ABC in Pudsey , they would check first for free and advise. Regarding the mileage that is possible, neighbours vRS Octy diesel has done that ,and still has some left. Most people who have diesels cover large mileages ( and motorway) , my remapped petrol, I get 8000 if I am lucky, but drive it like I stole it on moor roads and replace tyres at 4mm tread wear

Had similar a couple of years back which was down to one of the bushes (don't know which) but it wore a shoulder into the tyre (Toyo T1R in the pic but it did the same to a Pirelli so no tyre make specific)

The tyre in the pic was only 6k old when i had to replace it. I put it down to alignment which i had done but the following Pirelli went the same way in under 1k miles which is why i had a specialist have a look and they diagnosed the worn bush.

you won't get 24000 miles out of a set of T1R's. You'll be lucky to get 10000 if they're on the front.

I've seen the same issue of a set of eagle f1's. turned out to be a worn bush.

The tyre is/was a T1-R and I have had them for a while, my choice, but harder tyres still spin in 2nd gear with all that torque.

The tyre has done its service at around 10,000 miles but the nature of the corner wear was weird.

SN - interesting you mention the rear axle, what could be up with that?

Brun747 I did use the search honest! but didn't see anything similar. That photo looks pretty similar, but was it worn the same all the way round, as mine was not? The worn bush sounds like a define to investigate. I've also been posed with a slightly bent drive shaft - hence the wear is not consistent around the tyre.

Can't really remember if it was the same all the way round!

24k is no problem out of a set of T1Rs depending on your daily commute. Between my 2 VRS's I have covered 170k miles mostly on T1Rs so plenty qualified to comment ;)

For anyone still wondering what it was, turned out to be a bent wheel hub. Very slight bend but it proved how the tyre could wear at one specific point on its revolution. The only time the hub had a knock was against a kerb in the snow ages ago. It took 75,000 miles from then until now to play out but it was never that bad before. Oh well, sorted now.

That would explain why you didn't have vibration through the steering wheel. A bent drive-shaft would alter the balance & you'd certainly feel it!
